This movie really blew me away. It shared some fundamental elements with RHPS (sex rock musical with quality songs gender bending). However, the plot was completely different, fresh, modern, believable, endearing even. The jokes are witty and the movies energy never faulters. I really think everybody with an open mind should watch this movie atleast once. There is so much to appreciate!
not really...........the lead role is a bisexual transvestite but there are no straight out gay sex scenes
I don't know about this one... I absolutely hated it. I can see how some people woud have liked it but I like every movie to include a little but of humor and something I can relate to. It just creeped me out
well your reply is valid and honest and thanks for recognizing that others would like it! Your reply clearly illustrates that you hated it BECAUSE it creeped you out and you couldn't relate to it, rather than because it was a "bad movie". Keep in mind that not everybody needs to relate to something to appreciate it. in fact some people live for things that expand them beyond there norm. Thanks for reminding me that other people prefer relating to things!
Hi Koopa - A mate of mine mentioned this to me just the other day. I thought he was talking about a play. Was this initially a theatrical piece? Who was in the movie, and what was it all about?
Hello Heironymous, It indeed started as a play written by John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask. John is a broadway actor and Steven a musician. Hedwig begins as Hansel, a little girly boy from communist east berlin. Hansel was molested by his american air force father at five and taught to be submissive by his overbearing german mother. He loves american rock n roll, singing, and dancing, etc. Soon Hansel meets Luther, an American air force sugar daddy that tempts him as an outlet for sexual curiousity. Soon Luther sweeps Hansel off of his feet, proposes to marry him and take him to America if he gets a sex change! Hansel complies, becoming Hedwig, and soon finds herself with a botched sex change operation and a cheating Luther! All alone, she turns to her love of rock music and puts both her heart and her story into songs. Along the way she meets a new boyfriend and grooms him to be a rock star. But he betrays her, getting a solo record deal based on their songs and taking all the credit. She does everything she can to get the truth out while dealing with her dual feelings of love and betrayal for and by the rocker respectively.......
Hey Koopa. Sounds interesting. I'm amazed at how many films I watch that I discover began in the theatre. Usually the live, raw energy of the theatre really brings the story alive. My mate was talking about it being just incredible. Hope I get to see it soon
oh it is a wonderful movie. people compair it to rhps, and i see why, but it is really hardly like it. but a beautiful movie. made me cry
Yeah, it was a play. It had a really big cult following as a play. I loved loved loved this movie. And no there was no sex scene. Just lots of talk about sex. And well, one handjob scene with the guy int he bathtub, but thats it.
i really enjoyed hedwig ,,,,, it definitely wasnt what i expected when i ordered it by mistake,,,, made me really think on the whole subject of sexuality n homosexuality etc etc,,,,, i liked the music lyrics and the lil drawings etc,,,, had a big effect as well... i watched it with my 15 yr old as well n made for a very interesting conversation for us both and am sure opened her mind as well... would make an awesome musical on stage,,,,
That's a picture of my old drama teacher, Glen Matthews, performing in the play. He's very nostalgic about the play; he brought it up a lot. I thought it was a great movie, not quite the kind you just casually watch, but a cool watch nontheless.
One of my favourite movies in the world. The soundtrack is amazing and the oven scene is one of the best Lou Reed covers ever!
