well technically Micheal Angelo Batio is the best guitarist in the world.(http://www.deanguitars.com/angelo/) towards the middle it gets real good.

however personal preference says Kirk Hammet

Garcia, Clapton, DUANE ALLMAN (how could we forget?), stevie ray vaughn, Hendrix... i am very impressed with today's supershredders like steve vai, very talented but not my cup of tea... its so fast and technical but lacks feeling - something all of the above musicians had a LOT of.

He may the the most technical guitar player in the world but he can't write stuff worth shit. Ever hear his band....my god when one of my headphones up to my friends head he said "what's that sucking sound?" I said nothing....just Michael Angelo Batio......

wut is it about hendrix that makes people say he is the best guitairst? i mean hes a hell alot better than me. but not nearly the greatest. it was revolutionary but not great guitaring. clapton and page and gilmour are so much better. and anyone who even has the balls to say cobain should be shot. he was a good song writer but his greatness is in his songs simplicity and lyrics

Jimmi took (stole if you will) what clapton, Jeff beck, Jimi Page, Robbie Krieger & townshend were doing and took it to next level, that's why.
all the guys were beaten around the chops very badly by jimmi, Jeff beck never wanted to touch a guitar again for a long time!
Eric Clapton was Jimmi's greatest inspiration, he really wanted to meet eric.
but then jimmi appeared on the scene and just flew by, took off...

nobody ever played like that before (we're spoiled nowadays, people hardly every really listen to a solo) back then it was another story.

Pete Townshend & Eric Clapton where watch jimmi play one night and Eric said, i'm gonna pretend 'm him next time i'm on stage" to wich Pete said "I'm gonna play him offstage"[IMG]
    in 2001 he did!

This has to be the absolute best live gig of all times! and the previous one was also held by the who! Live at leeds, but this one blows that away.

sometimes certain magical things happen at gigs, and they did here that night! If you haven't seen this dvd, you should! and you will be happy for the rest of your live[IMG]

Jimi page used to be a better player then townshend, but not today, clapton & page have gotten older and slower, while Pete Townshend and Jeff Beck seem to be speeding up on there guitar rage
Mark knopfler used to be my guitar god, he intruduce me to music and guitar ate the age of 4, and i've been wanting to play eversince, but he got older too, so Pete still hold the throne...

and yeah of course there are people like satriani and Vai, but those are another class, that like a surgion vs pilot thing, wich is harder?
that's guitar porn, wich is nice once in a while:H

I'll say the responses of Hendrix and Page aren't really surprising at all.

I'm just going to toss in Chuck Berry since he started the electric guitar craze. I recall Lennon saying "Another name for rock n roll would be Chuck Berry".

i don't think David Gilmour is under rated, he's right up there with the big guys.
if anyone is underrated i think it is Richie Blackmore , he'd doing Folk now! he's sick of rock, that's sad...

    Keith Richards??
i agree, he's a Riff machine...but can he stand up to other names mentioned here?
he's not that versitile...don't get me wrong, i love the guy.

    Roumlig........Mmmmm.....His music is orgasmic. ORGASMIC.

I think he's slightly underrated, as well. I mean he's usually in most people's top ten, but not the top three or so, which I think he deserves. In my opinion he's the greatest guitarist alive.

david gilmour puts on some great sustain on his guitar as well. i can never get that good of sustain. what's the trick? do i need a les paul to do it?

it's hard to say who the best guitarist because how do you define the "best"? technicality? emotion? versatility? and too many people are forgetting the great guitar players that don't play rock music. wes montgomery, bert jansch, adrian legg to name a few.

i'd say the best all around guitarist would be Page because he's so versatile. but he's definitely not the best technically. i dono...it's too hard to pick one. i do like Jimmy the best though. but Jimi is beginning to catch up

See I rank my guitarists in an sort of unusual way- By tone. Musical signature, so to speak. And the level of pure, raw, emotional power. Thats why my top three are a bit unconventional. I picked

    1. David Gilmour- while technically he is very, very good, he has such a memorable tone and style. And when I listen to his solos they are practically emotionally blinding. Like on "Comfortably Numb", on the first solo it feels warm and blissful and sweet, and then in the second solo it's jumps to this uncovered emptyness and desperation and all these things are evoked in tone and style.

    2. George Harrison- Apart from being a huge influence on many, many guitarists that were infatuated with the Beatles, he has this amazing whiny guitar sound that sounds sweet and rocking, or sad and lonely, mystical and etherial- but it always, always sounds like George Harrison. He played these underrated compacted little solos that even accomplished guitarists like Eric Clapton and Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty have called tricky and complicated. Not to mention his slide work- which can bring you to tears and raise goosebumps on the back of your neck.

    3. Pete Townshend- I think Pete's strongest point is his amazingly memorable guitar riffs. Stuff like Pinball Wizard, and Bargain, and My Generation and The Seeker and Substitute. He plays wonderful lead guitar while having a rythym mentality. If you look at Pete's guitar work in some songs it's almost the strongest central rythym (with Keith Moon and John Entwistle playing Drum and Bass solos almost the entire song at times...lol). He has a great amount of versatility- churning out something sweet like "Behind Blue Eyes" or something Pissed off like "The Real Me"
