looking for some gentler hippie songs... i'm making a compilation cd for a friend's young daughter, and i want to put some gentle lullabye type songs on it. the flowery stuff, not PF or the doors or anything, but not childish either. (no puff, please! haha) for example, i've got "kiss at the end of the rainbow" by mitch and mickey. if anyone can give me some suggestions they'd be much appreciated guys!
good idea with nick drake... he's got so many beautiful songs. five leaves left, i think it's called, is a great album. thanks!
Feelin' Groovy/Simon and Garfunkel Live for Today/Paul Revere and The Raiders San Francisco(Wear flowers in your hair)
grateful dead... specifically somgs from american beauty... such as: candyman ripple brokedown palace attics of my life or perhaps some of their stuff like 'franklin's tower' or 'must have been the roses'
The perfect album would be Donovan's album Songs for little Ones which features on the Gift from A Flower To a garden double album set. Very similar is Vashti Bunyans just another Diamond Day album she was a mate of Donovan and sounds like a female hybrid of Donovan and Nick Drake and sings very gentle acoustic folk that often sound like lullabies Also worth checking is American hippie folk lady Linda Perhacs who made an astonishing gentle psychedelic folk album called Parallelograms, like a trippy Joni Mitchell meets Karen Carpenter, gorgeous stuff
Another current favourite of mine is a late 60's early 70's british psychedelic folk act called Magna Carta who sound like a cross between Simon and Garfunkel and The Incredible String Band, they do some very pretty ballads songs like White Snow Dove, Elizabethan and The Bridge at Knaresborough Town that are the ones to check out. Magic Carpet were also in the similar vein, they featured folk singer Alisha Sufit and classically trained sitar player Clem Alford and made some magical hippie folk in the early 70's
Wild Horses by the stones would be a good lulluby Give me love by George Harrison Im in a Rainbow, The day song, or anything really by Sweetwater Groovy Kind of Love- by the mindbenders I think??? Any Joni Mitchel or Joan Baez...
"Goin' Back" by The Byrds, in fact there's plenty of stuff to check out on the Notorious Byrd Brothers album that could fit this category,
How bout...Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic by Dylan or pretty much anything by Bread (I love Diary, Guitar Man and If), Cat Stevens' I Love My Dog and On The Road To Find Out, Edie Brickell's Me By The Sea, kids always love Lather by The Airplane, Joni Mitchell's Circle Game and Both Sides Now, The New Riders of the Purple Sage have some cool ones like Garden of Eden, All I Ever Wanted and Save the Day, Paul McCartney's Bluebird and Junk....these are just some off the top of my head!
Somebody mentioned George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" and may I also suggest mostly all of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass Album...its wonderfully relaxings... The nicest songs in the way of what you're looking for... "I'd Have You Anytime" "My Sweet Lord" "If Not For You" "Behind That Locked Door" "Run of the Mill" "Beware of Darkness" "Ballad of Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)" Other various songs: "Here Comes the Sun"- The Beatles "Happy Together"- The Turtles "Imagine"- John Lennon "Strawberry Fields Forever"- The Beatles "In My Life"- The Beatles "Badge"- Cream "Mr Tambourine Man"- Bob Dylan "Only A Northern Song"- The Beatles That's going through my whole playlist thing...I never realized how much Beatles I've got...sorry 'bout that
