I never got a chance to see them with John, but have heard a few shows. I thought Ed brought a lot more to the table and his songs provided an interesting contrast to Dave's.

Oh well, not like the ever leave Ohio anyway. I loved going to hookah shows while I lived in Ohio and West Virginia, but unfortunately its pretty certain I'll probably never get the opportunity to see them up here in the Northeast

oh you kids dont see it yet, but you will. john, although a bit beligerent, was an artist of writting songs, whereas ed was kinda a pretender, a frat boy if you will. most of us hookah heads didnt mind them getting rid of john, too much, but replacing him with ed was kinda insulting, in my mind, and really detracted from thier musical integrity. thats why they didnt progressss the whole time ed was in the band, they were just riding on the coattails of the momentum they had with john. i could go and see steve play every night, but then ed would ring in with lyrics like "lets see how many hippies wee can fit on a hippie bus" yiiick!! just wait till they bring back the old tunes. oh well, i just hope john can stay sober.

    I'm sorry, I disagree

I love many of Ed's songs. Alexander I & II, Dragonfly, Thief, Only Falling, Surround, Through Hiker. I love Dave, but I feel that Ed was far more progressive with his song writing and how he shaped the music over the last five years than Dave did.

Aww heck...I got into hookah listening to pre-ed music (aka the john era). I only started seeing them live after John was gone and Ed took his place.

There's really no way to compare the two. Both have completely different styles. Ed had many good songs, (ie Dragonfly, Through Hiker, Thief) but sometimes it seemed that he was trying too hard to be poetic and poignant. Whereas John seemed a little more earthy, down home blues and such. It all depends what you want to hear. I enjoyed them both.

But there's no sense in arguing over the past. Now there's Hookahville at legend valley to look forward to. With Blues Traveler, Yonder Mountain SB, Mike Perkins, and Great American Taxi already on the bill, it looks possible that once again Hookah may be trying to up their standings in the scene. It would do nothing but make me happy should they start visiting other states more often and build a bigger fan base.

    Anyways, my 2 cents.

    Here's to Hookahville !

Hookah sucks with John Mullins or with Ed McGee...

But I don't play nice over those guys anymore...

Too erratic, and too uneven in their performances...

Adding some belligerent like John Mullins ratchets up the intensity, but is the extra stress associated with livewires like John Mullins really worth it?

    Excerpt From ekoostik.com:
Some questions about the ghosts of the past must be answered. The stories are out there. Some true, some ridiculous, some both. There have been times when I wasn’t fit to be on the stage. Remembering those times is just as important as not repeating them. Professionalism and devotion to the music are the standard. The fans deserve it and quite frankly, the band demands it. Not only of me but also of themselves. It is in this spirit that I am happy to return.

    Ekoostikly Yours,

    John Mullins

    This is not confidence inspiring...

It's a novelty act attempt to save a sinking ship...

Wow, you really are a bitter fellow, now, aren't cha'?

Novelty act? How is it a "novelty act" when one of the original co-founders of the band rejoins the band. How about giving the man a chance? I've personally met Mullins many times. He's cleaned up his act. The ball's in his court.

You, sir, are an idiot. The feces that you spew are proof positive that you are talking out of your ass.

Now go along and let the big kids play.

    '

    I'm older than you, Junior...

Ekoostik Hookah is sinking... Ed McGee leaves the band. The percussionists leave the band. Everyone is leaving the band. After 14 years, it's safe to say that the Rose has lost its bloom...

To prevent themselves falling off the radar ENTIRELY, they rehire John Mullins in an attempt to keep Ekoostik Hookah part of the "scene."

I can have all the venom I want for Ekoostik Hookah.

    I like good bands.

    Professional bands.

    Energetic bands.

That SHOW UP for their gigs...

Ekoostik Hookah has earned my venom for failing to achieve or succeed at the parameters listed above.

I can certainly share in some of your sentiments as hookah does have its fair share of disfunction.

However, the twenty or so times I was fortunate enough to see them between 2001 and 2004, they blew my mind 90% of the time. The only subpar show I saw was the first night in Amsterdam where it seemed Sweeny was trying to force things too much.

I'd love to see them again, but I highly doubt they'd make the journey up here to New England anytime soon. They've got a lot of damage control to do on the home front in Ohio before they can try and grow the fanbase from there - not that they were ever that succesful at venturing much beyond Ohio.

well when they first left ohio they had a huge following, its just too bad that john was too wasted, and worse that they replaced him wiht a frat boy. i did happen to run into them a few times over the years, and every time, steve stole the show from every band that played that day, heck from every band that played that month.

I hate to dredge up an old thread, but I just had to add my 2c. I love both Ed and John in studio cuts. And I love to see hookah live (w/ Ed). I haven't seen them since John re-joined the group. But I have, unfortunately, seen John solo since he rejoined the group. SSDD. He was so wasted that we left the show halfway through. Unfortunately, everytime I see Mullins, he's slurring and needs his PA turned down so that no one is subjected to his butchering of songs that, under normal circumstances, I love.
