In the end, those responsible for attempting to remove God from the hearts and minds of the people of any nation will stand and be judged... and sentenced, though I also feel that it shouldn't be anyone else's decision wether I should or shouldn't worship God or what got to worship, though I am a Chrsitian. But... I was just reading that a school system forced a teacher to take down a poster of George Washington solely becuase it had him praying in it. Sometimes it makes you wonder what the world is coming to. Sure, seperation of church and state, but why do people have to take it so far. I just feel that if it offends you, great, I didn't tell you to not pray or believe in God... but I feel that there's going to be more people who would shrug it off, turn against it, and keep on keeping on. I don't know if it's just me, or does it seem like old values and morals are gently being further erased every day... if not, ripped from you?
What do values and morals have to do with prayer or religion? I feel like the world has made leaps and bounds of progress since the days when religion was an indocrinated part of civil society. The days when religion ruled was a very oppressive time towards humans, posters being pulled off walls pales in comparison.
It's that some people don't seem to have enough moral value for a respect for another's religion, mere belief in god... or in this case, the lack thereof.
I don't think it is unfair to ask that religious symbols, such as a man praying to god, not be in public classrooms. No one is giving you any less freedom than any other religion in this country.
It's not that... it's just that it's George Washington and nobody said anything about him praying or not praying... It's the fact that it's denying that he was a Christian and not a matter of encouraging children to pray or not pray.
Ya, just like those damn evo fundies and secular humanists. You know, the ones who skew Google's search results to further their own Satanic plots ... :H
In the UK religious education is compulsory throughout school, and something is taught of most major religions. I went to a Catholic School so most of it was about Christianity however. We did nothing at all on Buddhism or other Eastern religions as I recall. Also note that religion has no place at all in our science classes, in fact I find it remarkable that the Intelligent Design debate is happening in the 21st Century at all. I think it makes perfect sense to teach about religion in school, it's merely the method by which it is done that is important. I would have been happier if the religious education in my own school was geared more towards an overview of every world religion, or even better toward philosophical debate.
George Washington's religon was disputed, apparently. I refer you to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_washington I think "values" would include not pushing religion on people. If you're that teacher, you can just get a normal picture of Washington, or keep it in your teacher space in your desk or something. Public schools should not be a place for religion, unless it is taught in an objective sense. Also, I don't think there's a movement to remove god from the hearts and minds of the nation. This in particular is more of a respecting the beliefs of others thing.
