Godspeed you Black Emperor!

Discussion in 'Alternative and Indie Music' started by Lying in a field, Jan 10, 2006.

  1. Does anyone on here listen to Godspeed you Black Emperor! or any of the related bands?

If you don't know already, they are an instrumental band out of canada and play some profoundly beautiful and depressing music. The music is often played with ad-lib sound effects and voice overs, poetry e.g. -

Most of my friends who are indie, alternative music fans fall in love with them the first time they hear them. They are like an anti-government, depressing version of sigur ros. Out of all the bands i like, this is one i'd reccomend to anyone who likes weird music.

I've listened to their album Yanqui U.X.O a bit. It's orchestral but I like it.

yah give another album a shot. these guys are genius, better than anything coming out these days. but also harder to get into but worth it and rewarding in the end.

  8. Thanks carlfloydfan - theres so much obscure music out there its hard to pick whats good and whats not. I've heard of silver mt. zion and set fire to flames - they have something to do with the members of godspeed right?

Puddin, I can understand why not everyone would like that album, give another one ago, but i don't know if you'll like em - you really have to like long drawn out silences, wierd sounds and no lyrics

back in highschool, like 6 years ago I think, a buddy of mine, who was always lending me shit to check out and who was the oddest little kid (he was always into the most obscure stuff) handed me a Godspeed you Black Emperor CD. When I took it home I had no fuckin clue what to make of the wierd shit comming out of my stereo other then it evoked emotions that no other music or any form of art for that matter, ever has

havn't listened to them in ages, not exactly my cup of tea, but ya, they do rock, fuckin montreal is such an amazing city for music

you'll find that those kids are the best ones to chill with cos there obscure tastes in music usually extend to their personality making them unique folks. keep him around! obscure is good.

Godspeed! You Black Emperor is one of the greatest groups of all time. "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" is absolutely epic. f#a#∞ is my third all-time favorite album. I have all of their offshoot projects as well, like "He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms," and "Born into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward." I wish I could have seen these guys live (I don't think they're still around).

I also dig the ever-lovin' fuck out of My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai. Explosion in the Sky kind of suck...

  15. I couldn't resist the temptation to post the lyrics of the first track in the thread..does anyone else find that 'poem' so incredibly moving?
