Would this bother you as parents, being that the students consists of kindergarten through sixth grade?

How are people supposed to accept people for who they are if they're sheltered from things that happen in everyday life?
granted, like the article said, it might be hard for the younger kids to wrap their heads around the fact that there's a man's voice coming from a woman's body, but I think that it's more important that kids are shown some of the "strange" things that happen in the world so that they don't develop prejiduices (sp?) later.

The article doesn't say how long the teacher was gone.

I know people will disagree with me, but, yeah, it might make me uncomfortable. I am not totally convinced that people are genuinely one gender in their minds and physically another. I have to wonder if there's not something else going on there. I'm not an expert on it, but I am not convinced.

I have heard the argument, "Well, why would they subject themselves to a gender reassignment unless they really were the other gender?" but I'm still just not totally convinced. I almost wonder if they don't feel that they're the other gender to deal with some pain or something. I don't know.

One of my family members had a sex change from female to male, and he is happier than ever now. I wouldn't have a problem with it at all. Maybe that's just because I've been there. I just saw how sad he was as a female, and how happy he is now, that's all that matters to me.

no, I would not have a problem with a teacher having a sex change operation. I choose not to teach my children to hate people because they are different. Prejudice sucks. There are plenty of other reasons to have problems with teachers and schools. I don't care what is under their clothes, or what clothes they wear at all. I most certainly wouldn't label this teacher a pedophile, which is what the article seems to be hinting at. Most pedophiles are heterosexual men, not men who become women. And she's a substitute teacher, for cryin' out loud! The kids probably won't even realize she's the same teacher that used to be Mr. McBeth.

Amen, sister. I agree completely. It wouldn't bother me. There have been studies on people who get gender reassignment surgery, and many many of them have sex chromosome anomolies, genital anomolies and often have "vestigal" sex organs of the other sex, often in their bodies.

Gender isn't as simple as "boy" or "girl" in all.

Yeah, as I wrote my post I was wondering about that. I know that some people can have the genitalia of one sex, but the gonads of another, for example. So that would make it make more sense for me.

I haven't been in their shoes, so I don't know. It just seems like such a drastic thing. If a person had a sex chromosone anomoly, a genital anomoly, or a vestigal sex organ, I guess I could see how that could really make them feel out of place in their body. I mean, sometimes my ovaries seem to rule my life. So I can only imagine.

I didn't see anything in the article that made me think people were concerned about her being a pedophile.

You're right, too, she's a sub. Will the kids even know? That's why I was asking how long she'd been out. It seems like the parents who are freaking out are making sure their kids remember this.

And to take an ad out in the paper to draw people to the meeting to oppose her return? Wow. That's awful. Would they put up with taking out an ad to draw people to a meeting to protest hiring a teacher for just about any other reason? (Okay, besides maybe being a pedophile or Osama bin Laden?)

emphasis mine. I guess that's why I thought those parents must be thinking.... That's why a certain homosexual teacher here locally was fired, a few homophobic parents afraid he'd prey on their precious sons.

Really? The person was allowed to be fired for being gay? I thought that was illegal.

I mean, I think even male pedophiles who prey on little boys aren't gay with adults, you know what I mean? (Not that I have pedophiles all figured out.)

it was quite some time ago, and I think they trumped up some charges that never ended in arrest. But just because he went to court over the accusations was enough to get him fired.

i wouldn't care. i've had several teachers i coulda swore were men in drag, and they never hurt me in any way. i highly doubt they'd cause my children any harm, either. i can't tell y'all how often i've felt like i'm in the totally wrong body my entire life. i haven't hurt anyone.
