it annoys me.. maybe im the only one who feels like that but ugh.. i cant buy a skirt i think is unique without seeing it at school the next day. i used to think my clothes made me stand out from other ppl... but lately everything i wear is "trendy" and i really hate it. not really sure why i posted this... it was jus an opinion i have... trying to think of new ways to keep my individuality but without being classified under any kind of high school label.. eek.

Hmmm I used to struggl ein high school with striving to stand out from the crowd..

And there will always be similar clothing being worn wherever you go..

But its the inside that truly makes one unique...so honestly, dont worry about the fabricated image of something you feel true in yourself being sold in major stores an dunder majorlabels...just continue with what makes you feel the best and nothing can compare.

I am so glad somebody thought of this topic. The other day I was in JCPenney with my mom. This one girl was dressed like a complete hippy. You could tell she was a daddy`s girl. Ya know, a popular bitch who thought she was better than everyone. As she rung up my order, she gave me dirty looks, cuz of my outfit. I was dressed as myself, a hippy, and she was making fun of a hippy while she was trying to impersonate one. You know where I`m gettin at? It is ANNOYING!! I feel your pain...

    Question...isn't "hippy" a stereotype?

My advice...don't care, just be yourself.

Well, I haven't had that problem yet for 2 reasons:
1.) hippie stuff isn't really a big in-style thing right now here, and
2.)I am a guy and it seems that guys don't seem to be going for the whole "hippy" thing.

But why not try going a differant hippy-look route? Instead of the flowy dresses, try patchwork, or like tie-dye and jeans/bell bottoms or something. There has to be some style of hippie clothes that they aren't wearing...

Dahling, thats not "hippy" thats the "boho" look, now don't you worry, it'll be out of style in the next ten minutes.

you can't buy something "unique" if it's been mass produced and is being sold at a "trendy" store anyways..

if you truly want unique clothes, make them yourself...

or buy something from one of the sewing mamas on this forum.. they make some beautiful threads that are guaranteed to be one of a kynd, and if i weren't broke all the damn time, i'd already have bought from them by now..

    No kidding!

Support talented people, not faceless corporations.

*I'd also buy stuff from people here, but I'm getting to the point where food is too expensive...

This reminds me of last night, I was out at the mall looking around with a friend and boho was everywhere......I love the look, always have. The only problem with mall clothes (besides the price..) is that the beautiful, colourful skirt you just saw has 20 sisters on the rack beside her...;)

    I just don't like cookie-cutter clothes. :)

well, that's what happens when something is in fashion - malls market it. There are ways of being unique clothingwise... either make your own clothes or redesign existing clothes with your own flare. That'd make u unique and stand out a bit more, and not have to worry about having some clothing twin out there...

I was going to give this same advice.

Who cares what you wear? Wear what you like and what is comfortable...who cares if other people are wearing the same thing?

Labels suck...and you're trying to fit one.

Caitlin has a great point and day tripper777 is correct 100%

The bad news... the only thing that is unique in this world and has no similar qualities is your inner self. No body can copy, or buy a better inner self. Thats what makes someone unqiue... You know unique is bad word in my book. When I think unqiue, I think different and cool... then again the big question... how do you define cool?

I believe by boho your talking about like peasant shirts and paisley skirts, but I really don't know because I'm not female and I'm not up on such things. That really sucks that it has become popular and I disagree, even though I guess you are trying to fit a "sterotype" I think that the fassion sterotype of hippys is helpful because it helps people identify family and likeminded folks at a distance, mabye prompting one to strikeup a conversation. Same thing with dreads, pretty much the entire point is to look diffrent and be easily identified as a hippy.

That's what I was going to say.

    Don't sweat it.

Be oblivious to what they're doing, like me. It's nice.

Sew your own stuff. It's fun.

Soon the little preppies will forget all about this fad and they'll pretend to be something else. Like cowgirls. Or rappers. Or something. Who knows?

Really, it's sort of flattering. This has been going on for about, what, almost 50 years now? And they're still copying it? That's super.

Maybe, just maybe, a few of them will accidentally stumble into real hippiedom by imitating it.

And the snotty cashier? Just jealous. Or snotty all the time.

The thing is, if you're authentic, and you just be yourself, then there's no sense in worrying about what 'they' are wearing.
