It's not what, but who is suffragette city. One can only guess, but it may be inferring that the price (psychological?) you have to pay is too high if you want to be with her. Like a lot of songs you can only surmise the meaning.

excerpt from a Bowie Interview from 1972 about Ziggy....

so anyway what you have there on that album when it does finally come out is a story which doesn't really take place...its just a few little scenes from the life of a band called Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars...who could feasibly be the last band on Earth - it could be within the last five years of Earth...I'm not at all sure..Because I wrote it in such a way that I just dropped the numbers into the album in any order that they cropped up. It depends in which state you listen to it in. The times that I've listened to it - I've had a number of meanings out of the album...but I always do. Once I've written an album - my interpretations of the numbers in that album are totally different afterwards than the time that I wrote them and I find that I learn a lot from my own albums about me.

Don't lean on me man, cause you can't afford the ticket
    Back from Suffragette City
Oh don't lean on me man
Cause you ain't got time to check it

    You know my Suffragette City
    Is outta sight...she's all right

Laguna All night Boogies early 70's
I grew up in the sixties and seventies in Laguna Beach California, Wildfire was my very favorite local band. I saw them play twice, once at the main beach theatre when they had the famous[IMG] [IMG] all night boogies and also at I believe an American legion. I purchased their album in 1971 or 1972 at Sound Spectrum in Laguna which is still there today. I still have that Lp. It is master print no 91 and is a Primo label. The album cover is white only with a white sticker that say's WILDFIRE "SMOKIN" MASTER PRINT NO. 91 ( The numer 91 is hand written in ink). The vinyl label Says PRIMO SMOKIN , side 1 WF-0021 stereo Autumn leaves co. B M I , Songs are : 1 ) FREE 2:56 (R. Love - D. Jamison), 2) WHAT HAVE I GOT NOW 3:18 ( D.Jamison), 3) LET IT HAPPEN 3:02 (R. Love - D. Jamison), 4) QUICKSAND 10:46 (D. Jamison). Side 2 songs are : 1) STARS IN THE SKY 5:36 ( D. Jamison), 2) DOWN TO EARTH 4:25 (D. Jamison) , 3) TIME WILL TELL 3:06 (D. Jamison) 4) DON'T LOOK FOR ME 6:22 (R. Love - D. Jamison).

The music on this record is spectacular acid rock.
