Stupid topic this one and I know I'm going to get flamed by people for it but can we please get rid of some of the more ridiculous terms in our vocabulary. I don't know where they came from but they are awful.

    Number 1 - The term 24/7.

I hate people who use it. Just say all the time or always.

    Number 2 - 110%

Footballers often use it. "I gave 110% out there today". No you fucking didn't. You can only give 100%.

Anything over 100% can only be used in numeric or financial terms ie if I bought a loaf of bread for £1 and sold it for £3 I'd make 200% profit.

Number 3 - In a range 1 out of 10 how much do you love me. 12.

No..... In a range 1 to 10 the highest is 10. Don't say 12 because that would make the range 1 - 12.

Number 4 - Its all good.

    Aaaaagh.

Feel free to add more. Our language is being destroyed.

I hate the greeting "what's up?" It always seems to come at the beginning of a conversation with friends anymore. And mostly, you have to say "not much" in reply. And then you talk and ACTUALLY say what's up, and all of that. It just seems really unnecessary to have that mindless little exchange at the beginning of a conversation. Is that how it's getting everywhere, or is it just a weird Washington thing?

I don't have a problem with 110%. For me the 100% doesn't represent what your capable of, but rather the expectations of what your capable of. So exceding those expectations would entitle you to say 110%.

But I do agree that the English Language is being butchered everday. Lets take forum censors for example. I have been to forums that sensor the word cock. You type cock and it shows up as thingy. My conversation about Alfred Hitchthingy was ridiculous.

    I agree 110%. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give your statement a 12.

I don't really think these types of phrases mean our language is being detroyed. I would personally care more to be rid of phrases/terms with racist/sexist/istist undertones or implications. An example being words like "pussy" in describing someone who's weak or scared or something along those lines, the word being clearly feminine implies a sexist view that women are somehow weak or something. Calling something "gay" is another one for obvious reasons though I won't say I never use it...I just think there are far worse aspects of our language to pick at, your examples are at least relatively harmless (however silly they may sound) right?

I don't think any terms or words should be banned. We're supposed to be a people in favour of free speech. Free speech extends beyond the range of words we enjoy, or are comfortable hearing. That's the great part about free speech, is that it gives total freedom to whoever, to say whatever.

I'll admit, there are alot of hurtful terms we can do without. But, when you start banning things, and silencing people, then you're no better than the damned government, who's constantly censoring people, and making things illegal.

I dont think phrases should be banned, but there are a few I cant stand to hear.

    "Yo dog"

    or just "yo" in general.

    "Pot"

call it Cannabis... or Weed even... but "pot" wtf how did that come about? I can see weed... because its a weed, or grass, because its green, or bud, because it buds, or flower

    "shit"

Not in the phrase"oh shit i forgot" or "oh shit waht was that noise". but "yo that girl was touching my shit". "i got the best shit(cannabis) in town". Why does the same word that means feces get applied to everything else, I hav ebeen guilty at it occasionally, but I loathe the word used in those contexts.

I think the phrases you use "Y'all" and "dawg" sound bit stupid. The english slang here can confuse alot of people, it did so in New York.

I also hate the way someone might refer his girlfriend as "his bitch." Such as, "I'm gonna knob my bitch today."

oh yeah I definitely don't think any language should be banned, hurtful or not. I suppose I didn't take the origional poster very literally when he said that...I certainly didn't mean those things should be banned, they just bother me.

i think that no-one should ban anything even if its in bad taste...FREE SPEECH!! but if i have no choice ill ban people calling weed dope, stop it!!, dope is slang for crack not grass people theres a big difference, hmm maybe we could just see it as really uncool to do something like that, like talking about felching in a church

y'all (note the apostrophe's location) is simply a contraction for you all, which is far superior to saying you guys to a group including women.
Now, I refused to use it when I lived in Texas and South Carolina (Hey heron, did I sound raised in the south?), but I got used to hearing it from Michael Kang and one day used it as a joke, and now I do reel it out for the shock value!
I think a country that deveopled Benny Hill and East Enders should think carefully about throwing stones.
I wish we were civil enough to not use abrasive language with each other, at least on these boards.
I'd love to see bitch fade away.
I'd also love for the species to get over racism, sexism and other forms of tearing others down to build themselves up.
