I got a call from a collection agency today. I explained that I was getting my school aid on Sept 14 and that I can pay them then. This is what they said to me when they told me they could garnish my wages in the future and I told them I was thinking about teaching for awhile once I get out of college...

"Oh, teaching. I thought you meant you were going to get a real job"

    Ummmm.....

I had gotten a student loan about 17 years ago,but for whatever reason at the time I was not able to finish college (ex-husband's rules). So I was stuck with the loan bill that I have been unable to pay. Over the years the interest has more then tripled the total amount owed. I have had my IRS money withheld to pay some of it and about 3 years
ago I started having my wages garnished because of this, but the loan doesn't get any smaller. I have now stopped filing any IRS tax returns for about 4 years.

Rofl. So vinceneil, do you look forward to getting paid shit for the rest of your life? Teaching is a cool job, too bad everyone takes it for granted.

You know what, though, telemarketers are tortured souls. I once took a job doing that just so that I'd have $ coming in while I looked for better work. I totally SUCKED at it. I lasted a few days.

I mean, working as a telemarketer is just slightly more desperate than killing yourself.

I'm not saying they should be rude to you. They shouldn't. But just remember, you're going to be a teacher. Teachers are important. That person on the phone is going to go where from here? Selling stuff door-to-door? Aggressively washing people's windshields at gas stations and demanding money? What?

What is the standard protocol in such a situation? Maybe talk to some school teachers and ask what they did?

If you live in Texas or Pennsylvania, then old debts cannot be garnished from your paycheck, unless it is back taxes, student loans, or child support. Most debt collectors are just saying things like that to scare you. Don't let them. Just send them either a letter demanding proof of the alleged debt or a letter demanding that they no longer contact you. If they ignore a no more contact letter and keep calling anyway, then they are violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and they can be sued in small claims court for up to $1,000.00 plus attorney and/or filing fees.
