I'm a die-hard meat eater.... but here's the thing... I LOVE vegetarian food. I can't get enough of it.

    And so here's the question:

How many of you veg-heads like the taste of meat?

This would most likely indicate that you're either morally opposed or allergic...

Oh, that'd probably be me... I miss BLT's every time the tomatoes are ripe in the garden!!! But I developed a deadly allergy to pork in my teens & no substitute ever seemed quite the same.

Other than that though, I really couldn't care less about the taste of meat. Gimme fruits & veggies :)

I haven't missed meat at all during the 2 1/2 years I've been vegitarian. To be honest, very shortly after becoming vegitarian, I found that meat seemd kinda repulsive to me... I thought it would be tough, but it was very easy.

Whichaxe, you also have to realize, that there are vegitarian dishes that are very "meat like"... if you prepare tofu right, you would almost feel guilty eating it...

I used to like the taste I think.

But I don't miss it at all, because the food I eat is so tasty anyway.

Meat has grown to repulse me nowadays though.

Was never a die hard carnivore, and was pretty decerning about what meat I did have (hated grisle, processed crap, specific body parts etc) but otherwise would eat it just because it was there.

Found the transition really easy and haven't missed it, probably because there was no major attachment to meat in the first place.

Have developed an aversion of sorts which is probably just a mental thing. No idea about the taste, it's been so long I can't remember, it's just the smell. Probably very good for motivation but on a practical level it's no fun.
I don't eat with my housemates because basically their food repulsives me. Well if you can call processed chicken and that kind of crap, food. My omni family eat decent meat (good quality, free range) and that's not so bad.

Also can't stand the smell of bacon, never went crazy for it before but the full realisation of 'sorched pig corpse' has killed dead any possible ethusiasm. Did worry about that because so many people can't get over the temptation and fall off the wagon over it. Obviously not a worry, long as I can hide out in a darkened room with incense.

So can take or leave it.

"whichaxe" :) i am really interested to find out, to be pretty honest i don't think i even remember the taste of it.

That's exactly why I turned veggie, my husband was cooking bacon and it made me want to be sick - it literally smelt like burning flesh, not food.

I don't miss meat at all, I can't even stomach the substitutes... gimme veggies, fruit, legumes and grains!

I used to enjoy the taste.

But I definitely don't miss it, nor do I crave it.

And because of the obvious moral and health issues with eating it,
I will never eat it again.

I must admit, contrary to most other veggies here, there are days when I really crave meat, even though I haven't touched it for 10years. I think maybe it's more to do with the associations though, the meat I want is always turkey, pigs in blankets etc, all things associated with christmas when I was little.

    Still wouldn't go back though

Sophie Jo, I think long termers occasionally have a scent memory. Mine was always fried chicken or fish.

Wow... thanks for all the responses. That's interesting about the Bacon smell thing... I could understand how it could smell repulsive, but personally, I only think of the word "DELICIOUS"!!!! (and a thank you credit to Homer Simpson)

Let me ask some of you this question:

IS IT CHEAPER OR MORE EXPENSIVE TO EAT VEGETARIAN?

I haven't noticed a change in cost... I eat more raw veggies now, and since I buy organic as often as possible it's more expensive. So it kind of evens out in what I would have bought in meat.

I think it's definitely cheaper. Good quality meat is expensive to buy, whereas I could get a huge bag of potatoes for a fiver.

All the nuts, seeds and beans that I eat are really inexpensive cos you can get them in bulk.

About the same, less when more produce is in season, a bit more in winter. I also get some convenience foods, and I love GT's Kombucha, so the treats can up the total.
I can subsist for about 1/3 the cost of an omni diet, based on amounts that I eat.
(this calculation is comparing my spouse and son's items to mine, adding in all the shared groceries, such as rice and peanut butter, and divided my amount in a serving.)

i don't miss the taste at all, i never did like that taste all that much.

i think the only thing i actualy injoyed(that is, when i managed to opress the thought that it was a dead animal), was subway's BMT's.

i suppose i do miss it somewhat, what i liked best was the sauce i put tho, so i can still enjoy that=).

i spend a lot less than my friends that eat meat. but then again, most of them dont eat very healthy anyway. and junk food always costs more.

I havent eaten meat in over a decade. Every once in a while, salami makes my mouth water...but I know i'm not craving the dead animal, just the flavorings and spices that are in the salami.

I was quite the little carnivorous human before I began my veggie diet... I had alqways respected vegetarians and considered it, and one morning I just woke up and decided to quit meat, and that was 3 years ago. Now, I dont know if Id be partial to the taste of meat. I think that as you change in mentality and your body and mind ecome adjusted to another lifestyle habit, your tastes also alter.

I was a fan of bacon. I donated blood a couple days ago and I have had a little meat to boost my protein and iron. I was right on the lower limit of hemacrit (38 is the lowest acceptable) and I felt very anemic afterwards. So I have ate meat this weekend, but after today is over, no more! Just a quick break from veggieland, but back on the wagon tomorrow!

    Peace & Love
