I know they have a lot of live music happening in the parks throughout summer (I was out there last year during July/August and took some of it in). The Vondelpaark was good for that. Lots of people chilling - a good atmosphere.

There is the Hortus Botanicus - one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Really beautiful place, with a butterfly house, a three-climate greenhouse - another nice place to chill out in the middle of the city.

Then there are the markets - a really great fleamarket on the Waterlooplein (open each day apart from Sunday). All kinds of stuff on offer there, and if you are after anything 'retro', you can pick up some excellent secondhand clothes there.

If you are feeling adventurous, and not too worried about loosing your way, hire a pedal-boat and take to the canals! Boyfriend and myself did this last year, and spend a hot and sunny afternoon dodging canal boats and getting up close and personal with morhens and various other waterfoul. Was a lot more fun than it sounds believe me! :D

If i go to amsterdam i just go to amsterdam and see where i end up :) Theres a museum around every streetcorner and also a bar.
If you like movies, visit a cinema. Most cinema's show mostly blockbuster american movies with always dutch subtitles in stead of dubbing. If its bad weather you can always visit a movie.
If youll visit the famous tuschinsky theatre for a movie it wont be a waste of your time in amsterdam, even when the weather is nice. It has been restored to its original 1920's chicness. The cinema is astonishingly beautiful!

I am a big fan of the hippie market at the waterlooplein. :) You can buy yourself or your friends a nice present or wardrobe.

If the weather is nice the vondelpark Is a good hang out spot. The dam square too.
You can wander around the shops on your own, but stay out of the zeedijk area after dark, at least when you are alone.

There is plenty of things to do over there. If you like you can buy a cup of regular thea in a coffee shop.

Paradiso is a concert hall/club. Previously it was a church and you dont recognise it if you dont look for it. But in the hippie time it became a concert hall and lots of large groups have played there, it is not very large anyway, but legendary in holland. I have heard that the backstAGE toilet has autographs of famous people from the 60s till now who played there on the walls. Sadly i never saw it with my own eyes because its off limits. (backstage huh ;) ). From the inside it still looks like a church only better music :) (from metal to dance)

    Have great fun in amsterdam

    twat.

i come to amsterdam for the liberal outlook of the duch. i agree that if you are so inclined (I'm very inclined) take full advantage of the marijuana laws. However, constantly smoking while in the dam is one thing, whereas sitting in coffeeshops all day is quite another, do not dismiss the rest of this strange place. now get out and see the world you ****!

Oh the Tuschinsky rocks! its such a trip to go to even if your not stoned!...from the outside it looks like its from a movie set...a bit Gotham City...and Lisabeeny I remember thinking exactly the same when I first went there ummm 20 years ago!...I was rushing to drink my beer before the movie started only to be told I could take it in with me!...why can't we do that in the UK?...
