Tantra is a Yogic philosophy that dates back . . . . . . a real long time. hehe. How I interpret what I know about Tantra: Tantra's basic premis is that everything is one. Oneness is the ultimate state of consouisness, where here in the ego we see ourselves as seperate from the world because of our limitations within ego. Other Yogic traditions and philosophy's during that time period were more concerned with Samadhi (or highest state of conscoiusness, or oneness) then everything else. In these beliefs, it is suffering to be alive, and one should reach towards liberation of the mind via yoga. But the material plane is illusion, and therefore something to get away from. Tantric view would be that the illusion is part of the oneness in everything and therefore has truth within the illusion. Much as if I tell you a lie, and you believe it. It's still the truth that I told the lie, whether your aware of it or not. So Tantra = Oneness Other philosophies in india during that period = dualistic Now, the sex part comes in basically to raise consciousness to a higher level and experience oneness together. the male and female joining as 'all that is'. I assume The kama sutra's are text's that were written about how to go about this. It should be noted that during that time period sex was very taboo and not thought of as something healthy i guess, but certainly not something a religious person or seeker of god would do often, if at all. So the tantric tribes or schools created rituals that were 'sinful' for the times, such as intercourse, etc but in the ritual they are experiencing the divine oneness that the chaos has with order and invoking christ consciousness.
Basically tantric sex is sex for people who have too much time on their hands, and who don't like to get sweaty. Nuff said.
