Is it possible for us to make a difference?

    Is it merely senseless idealism?

    Should that stop us trying?

I remember reading in the Glastonbury festival guide this year, how the theme of this year's festival was peace, and that they did this to mark the Venus transit, earlier that month. They went on to explain how the transit of Venus across the sun, according to ancient Mayan prophecy, was supposed to open an eight year doorway, up until 2012, whereby mankind would make a transition from a state of duality and disharmony, to a state of unity and harmony.

    Is this possible?

    Do you believe?

    What if?

Now I'm not one to believe in superstition or prophecy per se. But what if we do have a chance to change the world? Can we do it? Regardless of ancient Mayan belief, nothing is going to happen, unless we make it happen. It seems a hopeless cause, setting the world to rights. It seems to be naive idealism perhaps. But I believe it is only so, as long as people keep telling you it is. If all those who cared, but had lost faith in our ability to make a difference stood up, and took action, by whatever means that could, then we could change the world.

We need to actively engage ourselves to facilitate a shift in human consciousness. We can and should do this by any means at our disposal. Poetry, song, stories, art, demonstration, education, dialogue, activism, anything that we think can make a difference, I believe, will. Take that new Faithless song for example. Millions of kids around the world, may now be humming to themselves in their head, that racism is a weapon of mass destruction. It would only take one of them to look around them and see the truth, open their eyes to new possibilities. A difference has been made.

Grandiose theories have been proposed throughout the ages to suggest better ways of living, better systems to replace the soulessness of capitalism. Communism, socialism, anarchism, environmentalism, the list is endless. But none of these utopian theories will ever ammount to anything unless such a shift in human consciousness allows them to. Mankind must move away from base desires, from greed, from conflict, from division. Whether or not this can be done in eight years is immaterial. What is important is that is must be done!

Can it be done? I don't know, but let it not be said that we did not try. Even in the smallest of ways, right up to the very greatest, we must make a difference. Let us not leave this world without leaving our mark upon it, without changing it for the better. And to emphasise my point, I shall leave you with a quote from one of my great inspirations...

"Don't let them transfer you, don't let them promote you, don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship because while you are there, you can make a difference..." - Captain James T. Kirk

life shouldn't be about "what if"'s, but about "what now"'s

every little bit helps, rome wasn't built in a day...miracles can't be relied on, but if we work day by day, week by week...if we even do that smallest bit, that smallest bit will collect together to form something big

i can't be arsed to go all philosophical right now, as i doubt that any of you need to know how much this world needs saving...we need to help others to understand this though :) been working my ass off past couple of days, and still got more to do, so am being restfull now

You know when you are making a difference....a small demo with a few people is surrounded by coppers and you end up with a truncheon on the head.

But then as the old adage goes...."There's nothing more politicizing than a truncheon on the head"!!!!;)

Hm, this is something I've been contemplating recently. Despite the fact that the majority of people seem to prefer to hide away from problems facing the world today, I think that once they are actually aware of what is going on, they won't be able to help but care. Mother Earth is crying out for help, and sooner or later, people will have to start to give a damn, because it's only a matter of time before the consequences will begin to catch up.

India won it's independence partly by such martyrdom. And if the state does act to oppress you, then it's clearly worried about something. Either way, demonstration and direct action isn't the only tool at our disposal to make a difference, just one of many that we should use for what it's worth.

By the way, where abouts in Norfolk are you from? I'm from Suffolk, near Beccles, right on the Norfolk border....

    Sal that was inspirational.

Its true that the idealism of a peaceful world is often put down by others as just idealism, no chance for realism.
Its can be looked upon in two ways, a simple dream which although sounds so so simple has so much to it that makes it imposible..... or just simply... a simple dream with hurdals that must be jumped to reach it. When a toddler decided it wants to be an olimpic runner when its all grown up doesnt get to acheive its dream by sitting on the sofa, the toddler learns to walk, learns to skip, jump and run. The todler grows older, learns and looses skills and trains, fights for its dream. We are mearly toddlers but we have so much time to grow, expand, learn and fight and we will acheive our dreams if we beleive we can.
