Anyone know of any good websites to locate shelters in your area ( one's that don't kill the animals). Tonight I went outside and a cat came up to me. When I reached down to pet him/her I could feel every rib, both hipbones, and my fingers sank between each section of it's spine. I feel so sorry for this cat. It's about 15 degrees outside and this poor thing is starving and freezing to death. I would take it in, but due to my current situation, I cannot. I gave it some food and milk for the night( fully knowing that it would consider this home), but I just didn't have the heart to shoo it away. It's been a couple of hours and the cat is STILL sitting on my steps. I don't know what to do other than try to find somewhere that could treat this cat medically and try to find someone to adopt it. I would like to try to find it a new home tomorrow, so if anyone has any information on safe shelters for animals PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know. I live in Tennessee by the way.

Yup, try here... http://www.petfinder.com//index.html It's a national site, and I know I've seen Tennessee mentioned before. Most of the work I know about is for guinea pigs, and I'm afraid I'm very behind on cat-rescues. But you ought to be able to find someone through petfinder. Good luck!
    love,

i suggest you take the poor baby ASAP because she could very well be on death's door step and she sounds like she is suffering tremedously.even if there are no "no kill" shelters close to you....taking her to any shelter will be better for her than nothing. milk might upset her stomach as she is so thin and many cats are lactose intolerant and you want to be sure to give her a *little bit* of food and not too much because of her emaciated state....too much food at once could shock her system. let us know how she does!:)

Thanks Elle, she showed up again today and I gave her some more food and milk. I found a good place that will take her and treat her, and then adopt her out. Only problem is that today the place was closed for Presidents Day. I'm taking her tomorrow as soon as she shows up, I'm sure she will. Wish me luck. I'll keep you updated.

You know, I saw an article in the newspaper yesterday about a local animal shelter-some people had left a basket of newborn kittens on the doorstep of the place, and the people that run the shelter said that they were going to try and find the people that did it because that was "against the law", and have them prosecuted. They said it was a case of animal cruelty to leave the kittens at the shelter. I mean, really. They complained that they couldn't take care of so many animals. How ridiculous. What are animal shelters for, anyway? I guess if the people left them on the street that would be cruelty too? What a fucked up, legalistic society.

What about the people who left the kittens? I guess it wasn't their responsibility to spay their cat. It also wasn't their responsibility to ensure that the kittens got good homes...if they didn't want the kittens, why on earth do they have an unspayed cat? Why do they have a cat at all? And animal isn't an object you can get rid of when your tired of it. It's a living being, and should be cared for, not dumped when it becomes inconvienient.
