the other day i went to a caffe and tried some 'chai tea latte' or something, and oh my gosh! i loved it! does anyone here know how to make it? please, any help will be appreciated
You can find several mixes for chai in the grocery store. I make my own with Celestial Seasonings Chai & vanilla soymilk. Most of the coffeehouses I've gone to have added extra cinnamon & nutmeg to theirs. Just a tiny sprinkle of each should make something nearly identical to what you had. Hope that helps! My absolute favorite bedtime drink is Celestial Seasonings' Chocolate Caramel Enchantment chai with just enough lite vanilla soy to make it opaque. Ohhh, it ought to be illegal for something to taste that good! love, mom
"chai" translates literally to "tea." in many places in the world, asking for chai could actually get you just a plain cup of tea. in the west chai has come to specifically mean tea with a blend of spices, usually based around things like vanilla, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, even things like coriander and anise can make it's way in there. more specifically still people may refer to chai latte's as simply chai. a chai latte is a drink made from mixing sweetened boxed chai tea concentrate with milk. a hot chai latte will be made with hot or steamed milk and milk foam. some people like whipped cream. a cold chai latte would be cold milk and concentrate. so how do we get gradually more specific beverages all with the same name, a word which simply means "tea"? i believe the noted chaiwallahs of india usually sell spiced teas made with milk. chaiwallah would be a term basically meaning "tea seller" and would be applied to any person who sold tea for a living. "wallah" is a hindi word that signifies a persons trade, particularly salespeople (read the book "the Death of Vishnu" and you'll be told some of the kinds of contractions you have for different jobs. chaiwallah, cigarettewallah, dishwallah, radiowallah) you can buy either chai teabags or chai tea concentrate at home. the concentrate directions don't need to be followed exactly, i tend to use a little less than it calls for. the chai concentrate we use at my job tastes a lot sweeter and less harsh than the boxed stuff we sell for people to take home, and it's also more concentrated, so just remember that even if it's made by the same people, it will be hard to make a chai latte at home that tastes EXACTLY like the one you had in the store. it will probably still be excellent though!
For best flavor, take the tea and spices (cardamom, cinnamon, etc. there's any of a number of recipes, google for it) Put the pan with that in milk on the stove, that's right, don't add the tea and stuff to boiling milk, put it in first and bring slowly to boil.
It's so much more fun and tastier if you make your own chai. Magic Mushroom chai is very good. As people have said above, there are plenty of places on the internet to find recipes.
it's like pumpkin pie in a cup Hey, that's MY line!!! Glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks so, nobody in my family thinks it tastes like punkin'! love, mom
Hey....I'm in Melbourne and I drink at least 3-4 cups of chai a day. Its all i drink really. I use a few different types, from raw mixes to powders to actual tea bags. They are all similar, but uniquely chai in their own way. Two of them I actually import...because I am American and my country rules the world I will pm you a list of those i have found available in Oz. cheers
If you want to make your own chai latte without having to use fake powders and stuff - Just make a really potent chai tea using recipes from the internet, or from chai tea bags. Then make sure its made mostly of frothy warm milk. Thats what a latte is, mostly milk obviously. I got a milk frother from harris scarfe for about $10 or less, i use it to make cappucinos, bloody great.
Ahhh the best tea I've ever had was at a pakastani's house, it was a once in a lifetime experience. I visited an Indian family recently and they make tea exactly how IG described it. Heat milk first, than add spices and regular black tea. I find the commercial stuff to be too pungent, even if diluted it doesn't quite approximate the homemade experiences I had. Also u have less control over the ingredients with commercial than with homemade, plus homemade is so much fun. Google for recipes and i usu. document my google research that way I can analyze the different recipes and apply my own preferences. Later I document the results and fine tune in the future. As with anything involving spices there are so many variations. You'll find a flood of recipes on the net and it won't be easy to approximate that particular chai u so enjoyed at the cafe, some u may not be impressed with at all, that's why documenting helps u keep track of what u tried and what u haven't. You can play with the different spice combination and u'll find one u like. Some of the spices i like are anise, cardamom, and cinnamon.
