funny you should mention it, Ive just begun to work with one of these this week. Seems like a CD upgrade from the old four tracks, and pretty easy to use. Im looking forward to getting into the more intricate fun of using it!
What brand and how many tracks? I was able to get a Zoom 16 track through American Music (not a plug) since there you can stretch the price to 3 payments. It's 5 am right now and I just did a 6 part harmony with "horse with no name" (wholle song is only two chords) and it's awesome adding reverb and chorus after you've recorded. I have been doing it off and on since way back, but it never really goes dry.
I also have a 16 track, and have also been up to five am regularly mixing various things. Most of my first week was re-learning good mic placement and figuring out which "suck" button not to press. I tried the amp emulators, and after several hours found a sound I could bear with, but prefer my own amp and microphone. Havent edited the settings yet tho, that should help. All told, Im very happy with it, and have just begun to get a grasp on what I want it to do: get analog sound with digital quality. Most of what we do is blues or freaky live psychedelic, our original blues songs seemed a good place to start recording. It gets a very true sound, and should be great for doing live shows.
Sounds good to me.. my bass player and I are also trying diifernte things. Sometimes I record directly into the machine and other times on Mini disk (live jam) then pass it to the machine. I find live jams have more of that analog ( and space around sound) sound that is hard to get even after adding reverb to a direct input recording. When I lived in places where I could not make loud sounds I would play right into the machine. When multitracks recorders came out people were unaware they could do that, since keyboards alone would sound good directly and everything else needed an amp, now they have built all that right into the machines.
I have a Mackie 1604 mixer running into a Boss Br-8 Digital Recorder.....its a good set up. running the sound through a mackie preamp with always make that digital recording a little more warm.
That is awesome too, I have a Br8, and I do love the amp modeling and effects, my only complain is the 100mb zip disks. I'll have to look into some kind of preamp since mics usuall y need a boost.
