Who else gets all anxious around this time of year? I do because Spring is almost here!!!! What are everyone's plans for this planting season? For me : more Garlic Onions more Sage Strawberries Sunflowers A lot of flowers of different types Potatoes Peanuts Tomatos(maybe) Peppers Cantelope Peppermint and thats all I can think of right now.
yeah....i love this time of year! i'm in the southeast us so it gets warm early. i still have some stuff in my winter garden like collard greens, mustard greens, garlic & some herbs. i've also got sugar snaps coming up as well as some lettuces getting ready to plant some beets & snap beans then on to the summer stuff like tomatoes, okra, peppers, & LOTS of herbs (my favorite plants) & flowers...... can't wait!!!!
lol... for me, I have a loooong way to go 'til spring. But we're already planning ahead My son loves to garden. I blame my mom, a Master Gardener. He's contracted the dreaded "Gardening Disease" from her. He's begged me to let him turn the 6'x12' deck off of our dining room into a vegetable garden. So he & my husband will be making 3 small cedar boxes so we can try square foot gardening. It's really gonna look nice, I think. He's chosen: peppers lavender cherry tomatoes basil cantaloupe carrots lettuce chive marigold cilantro cauliflower broccoli and baby pumpkins I'll also be working on splitting my lamb's ears, and maybe adding some dwarf sunflowers to my coneflowers & daisies. Oh, and my son wants to transplant some of "rose" to another corner of the house. Rose is a wild rose I dug up & brought home in a coffee can to my mom when I was a kid. She gave me a cutting when I married & moved away, and it really likes the soil here. She's made 7 babies, and I now have a hedge roughly 12'x4' of the sweetest non-rosey roses you've ever seen! love, mom
yeh, my daffodils are pushing up buds, and now it has gotten cold again at night. Hope I don't lose all the blooms (that happens occassionally around here if it freezes after the bulbs send up flower buds). I'm planning on planting the following: purple bush beans some sort of spotted dry bean (inca? aztec? some ancient variety) a fancy-dancy corn variety sunflowers (of different types) amaranth quinoa marigolds (DD asked specifically for these) a summer squash carrots ...there's more I can't think of right now. I got my seeds from seedsofchange.com they are all organic heirloom varieties that grow true from seed, so I can collect the seeds and grow them again next year. I'm going to make a sunflower fort for my children in our backyard. I also have tons of bulbs and perennials and even some herbs in the front yard that I need to separate before they crowd themselves to death.
oh i love seeds of change! they have so many interesting varieties. i got seeds from them last year, but be careful bc a lot of their seeds won't last longer than one season, so don't over-buy if you can help it! it has just turned cold again at nights here as well, so i will start doing some stuff indoors & i've created this mini greenhouse thing outside that i might experiment with. i am really excited about this year (even more than usual) bc i might possibly starting herb school this spring (fingers crossed) & i also just got a volunteer position at the local arboretum, so i can get to work with some master gardeners myself! green blessings you guys!
We will plant up the garden beds with the usual veggies, same as always, but will try a little more tender loving care this year. What I'm really planning for is some new dahlia varieties, that new huechera (sp?) Amber Waves, and one of those little umbrella looking Japanese Maples I want to put in a pot on our side yard patio. And sweet peas soon.
I'm growing.... potatoes onions carrots celery cabbage basil mint oregano pumpkins runner beans and I've also got a tree nursery goin on. Coastal Redwood horse chestnut sweet chestnut ash mountain ash (rowan) a couple of types of oak beech eucalyptus monkeypuzzle holly black, and redcurrants. This spring I'm also gonna throw in some flowers I think.
definitely starting to get impatient for spring here too.... this year i'm hoping to plant: tomatoes peppers lettuce carrots strawberries maybe corn lots of herbs (mint, oregano, basil, chives, and especially lavender and rosemary) flowers are lovely, but won't be needing to plant many of those because most of mine are wild ones i transplanted from the woods behind my grandmother's house and they're pretty much on autopilot!
i love spring i can't believe how much our garden has grown the love my brother has put into it is a big part of it i'm sure
I'm not sure what to grow yet. Last year was a disaster. I tried to renovate some space in the back yard behind the shed. I got lots of nice rocks and made some excellent walls for a garden extention. First the soil was complete shit. Lots of rocks and clay. Then all the time it rained, it rolled down the slope in the yard and washed away everything. On top of that, my dick head neighbours had a temporary pool. They frequently drained it and every time it washed away more and more plants, and finally fucking up the soil with the chemicals. Threw the pH way off. This year however I'll be moving it to a new part of the yard since my tree fell over in the autumn - much more sun light. I'll be extending my main garden this year 3 feet so I'll be able to put a few more things in that. Last year I had 3 tomato plants in that part, and they grew to be giants. They took over everything. I did get some big juicy tomatos though. This year I'll be doing alot of herbs, mushrooms etc. Chives, beans, potatos, peppers, corn. I have no clue what else. I'm in the dead centre of my city, so it's a concrete jungle. Not much room for expansion.
Oh yeah, I forgot our strawberry pots! I've got two terra-cotta pots that we're debating between growing with strawberries & herbs right now. I think the strawberries will probably win. They always do love, mom
I am in Alabama too *josai*... I am in North Alabama. We just got about 2 inches of snow... the first in years. and floyd soul... that tree nursery sounds like a pretty cool idea... I might consider doing that... I have a sort of "tree flower bed" that i use to grow trees until they become sapplings and then i move them... but they are just random trees that come up in the yard that I dont want to mow over. Good luck with everyone's gardening!
Ahhhhh......snow! hope you're having fun with it! i saw a few flurries saturday night, but of course none stuck around btw...where are you in north alabama?
The plants I keep in my room started growing like mad last week... seems the sun is strong enough already to make them feel spring is coming soon! (It sure makes me feel that.) Now let's see, what am I going for this season? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Besides, peppermint. And, tomatoes. Possibly some more veggies in my friend's garden.... And then, of course, I am looking forward to harvesting cherries -- but that's not that much work in preparation, it's more about waiting and hoping.......
I am not far from Huntsville. I just bought some 4 leaf clover bulbs to plant, I am going to grow them in a pot and see how they work out. I bought some cactus seeds too but I cant find them.
Hey Shanky... How long does it take cherry trees to start making cherries? Like from the sappling age?
agh you are all so lucky... I would kill to be able to have a garden! I think that'd going to big a main goal of mine for the future- get somewhere and plan to stay there long enough to at least grow a few things. I'd like to grow strawberries and tomatoes and maybe pumpkins? I don't have much experience gardening but these are the things I remember loving to work with when I was younger. Lots of different herbs and stuff would be nice too!
My dafodils are in full bloom! Crocuses are spent. Forsythia is still going strong, but on the downswing. My rose bushes have leaves and will be blooming by the end of this month. Can't wait to get planting! My kids are as excited about our plans for a veggie patch as I am - and what a great learning experience it will be!! I'm going to grow a sunflower playfort, too, that should be really fun, with some amaranth and quinoa in there for good measure (leaving a bare spot in the middle of them and a "doorway" to get to it. fun and nutritious! And way less expensive than buying those things from our one and only local health food store (we do not eat gluten, so alternative grains are big in our diet right now).
