I've noticed a lot of portable mp3/wma players, such as the iRiver, only play files of up to 192 kbps (kilobytes per second). For those that don't know the amount of kbps dictate the quality of the sound and what they don't often tell you on the box is that a lot of mp3 playes on the market seem to have this "glass ceiling" in place as to what "bitrates" are compatable. What digital audio players don't have this limitation? what would you recommend for a "fidelty whore" who has a good few files encoded up to anything around 320/400 kbps. If I'm not imagining this, this is yet another "oversight" in the way digital audo players are marketed. It's as bad as that "up to 40,000 songs!" nonsense.
My MP3 player is playing a 320 kbps file right now. It's a Creative MuVo, got it last summer or fall. I got something that is totally independent. It takes 1 AAA battery so it doesn't need a PC to recharge and if it discharges while ur out u can pop in a recharged battery, something which u can't do with so many digital players. It also doesn't need a separate program to install like iPod's iTunes or sony players so u can load songs onto it from anywhere. It doesn't have a display but w/ only 1/2 GB that's not too much of a ploblem, I'm VERY happy with my player.
Mine can play atleast 256 kbps, but I don't have many songs. Mine also takes 1 AAA battery. My player uses a program to put music on it though, but it came with the player on a CD and is free. The player can only hold like 500 Mb worth of songs.
flac. I dont even bother with MP3s anymore. THen again I don't use a portable player. I have a reciever and hi-fi speakers connected directly to my PC.
