Do you have the same tastes as your parents in music, TV programs, people, fashion, do you share their political views?

My dad and I are very different...although my mom and I were very similar. My dad doesn't listen to music (just talk radio), and I love music. I don't watch TV and my dad watches it ALL THE TIME. My dad thinks I'm absolutely crazy because of the way I look and dress. However, my dad hates Bush as much as I do...LOL it's about the only thing we have in common.

My mom was very unique, like me...and opinionated, like me. And loved classic rock, like me.

How can someone be "very" unique?

In my opinion, she was very different from the norm. Very different from the norm = very unique. Why don't you answer the question IronGoth and not question what I said...everything is subjective.

Yes, we have a lot in common! I was raised on western swing, big band, and country music! We both support a liberal agenda in politics. My mother is 83 years old, so there is a 43 year difference there!

My mother always said, "I don't care how you vote, but you better vote or you have no right to complain!

The word unique doesn't mean "different". It means there's only one of it.

You can't be "very" only one.

Well, considering human beings are made up of more than just 1 trait, you can be similar to the norm in thousands of traits and different than the norm in hundreds of thousands, thus making you unique...now say you're similar to the norm in a few traits, and different in millions...you're now much closer to being completely unique, thus making you a VERY unique.

There's multiple definitions to the word unique, so quit being a narrow minded jackass...there's no point to nitpicking at crap like that, especially when it has no relevancy to the point of her post...

oh, and I am very similar to my parents in my musical taste, programs, fashions, etc etc...I am only different in the sense of politics...

My parents are about as far left as a republican can get I suppose haha

They both support liberal topics, but vote republican because of financial reasons (Which I don't understand...cause my dad owns his own small tackle shop and my mom works at a hospital...not exactly rich business executives haha)

Usage Note: For many grammarians, unique is the paradigmatic absolute term, a shibboleth that distinguishes between those who understand that such a term cannot be modified by an adverb of degree or a comparative adverb and those who do not. These grammarians would say that a thing is either unique or not unique and that it is therefore incorrect to say that something is very unique or more unique than something else. Most of the Usage Panel supports this traditional view. Eighty percent disapprove of the sentence Her designs are quite unique in today's fashions. But as the language of advertising in particular attests, unique is widely used as a synonym for worthy of being considered in a class by itself, extraordinary and if so construed it may arguably be modified. In fact, unique appears as a modified adjective in the work of many reputable writers. A travel writer states that “Chicago is no less unique an American city than New York or San Francisco,” for example, and the critic Fredric Jameson writes “The great modern writers have all been defined by the invention or production of rather unique styles.” Although these examples of the qualification of unique are defensible, writers should be aware that such constructions are liable to incur the censure of some readers. See Usage Note at absolute. See Usage Note at equal. See Usage Note at infinite.

I am in the camp of hating the neologisms coming out of the mouths of those who don't understand English.

    One don't conversate, one converses.
You can't be very unique or very equal.

    You just can't.

Screw advertising for trying to mess with the language.

I understand grammar just fine. And what are you studying? Ebonix? Hater? Please.

And it's not "ya" it's "you".

But I shouldn't have to tell you that, Mr. Cut and Paste.

I'm sorry, I was descending to your level there.

Jeez you're a grouch. Sorry to tell you how you're misusing words.

Iron Goth, there must be a "pet language peeves" thread floating around somewhere. (Mine is improper contraction as in "where's the cookies?")

    Back on topic,
I found that my parents and my tastes converged as I got older. The emotion of my teens and 20's made it hard to see my parents clearly. I also assume that it took them time to learn that I am an individual rather than "their little boy." The older I get, the more I appreciate that my parents taught me the things I think of as important. Like, honesty and caring.

a bit, but i am the extreme version of their interests and views. They dabble a bit in jazz and classic rock, i dig it to the fullest extent. Politically, they are fairly liberal and im very liberal.
