Why can't this kind of crap be prosecuted as what it is--CHILD ABUSE? The best thing a kid has going for him/her is an innate curiosity about the world, and to crush that with religious dogma is one of the worst things you could do to a child.... http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-na-creation11feb11,1,1738727.story?ctrack=1&cset=true
god it's like what would have happend if the Navy guy had given the fuckwits of the "lord of the flies" a big sack of candy instead of "saving" em
I had to sign a permission slip so my middle and high school kids could learn about evolution. At least they are teaching it, but, still, a permission slip? My kids said there were a number of kids whose parents got them "exempted" from the class. I had to jump through hoops not to be forced to vaccinate, even though vaccines brain damaged one of my kids, but they can get out of learning FACT by refusing to sign a permission slip. It's a sad time, people.
Its not so much the fact that it will damage science that bothers me, it will damage science and that does bother me but thats not the worst of it. The worst part of it is that it removes peoples ability for critical thinking. There are lots of different beliefs on this planet, lawd knows theres plenty in this forum, teaching independant thought is far more important than believeing any of them. This will remove future generations abiliaty to think and we'll end up with a heavily polarized society.
we've already got a heavily polarized society. red states, blue states - we have not been so divided since the civil war.
I was thinking more globally. I dont live in the US but if the US turned into a heavily right wing christian state, then it would provide yet another country with an extreme point of view.
the US already is a heavily right wing "christian" state. we're just not "official" about it because we're in denial.
I'd say that the popular culture approving of dumbing down education, putting down people who are educated, and paying people who can stuff a ball through a hoop more than the Nobel prize winner for physics says something about our culture.
Then the teacher says "and do you know wrote the 'history' of the world?" Child: "yes. God did" Teacher: "no. i'm sorry that's wrong. God didn't write the bible. other people claiming to know God wrote it. but i guess we should trust them instead of educated scientists." Child: "yes." Teacher: "well, then here you go." *Teacher shoots all of the children in the room" Teacher: "NEVER QUESTION THE NEW WORLD ORDER!" or something like that
There was one good thing in that article. He told the childeren that anytime someone puts a text book in your face challange it. If its got the proof to back it up then its probably true, if it doesn't then you learned something there too. If you question everything then it forces your mind to learn the facts, make an educated decision, and develop your mind. I'm a biologist and as sad as this is there are a lot of inaccurate biology books in the world and most of them(even at the college level) don't accurately or clearly explain what evolution and natural selection are. Unless you take a course specificially on just that subject, it really isn't explained correctly.
It seems to me that this more or less recent uprising of creationism is an act of desparation. The last stage of acceptance is denial. It's unfortunate that the majority of people do not accept the bible for what it really is. A guide to life and peace. When you discard all the fairy tale crap, just like any well written fable, you are left with moral teachings. Religion would be a much more valuable tool for society if it were in conjuction with science, rather than opposing it. In regards to that evangalist guy. I would think that is brainwashing. It's one thing to entice people to question science. It's another thing when science is being discredited with obvious falsities and being fed to innocent minds. He is even so bold as to discredit evolution, yet explain the diversity of species as "God created blueprints for 'kinds' of species, and then evolution took over"!! That is absurd!? Even human evolution can be demonstrated in the last few thousand years. He also explains how fossils can be accounted for because of noahs flood?? I dont' understand how all those fossils got to all those different sedimentary levels though.. I also don't understand how noah managed to fit a pair of every creature on the ark. Not to mention a pair of every plant also. He would have had to employ all the slaves in Egypt, and by the time he got the last pair of critters onboard, the first ones would be dead.
