actually, the best version of careful with that axe, eugene is on zabriskie point..... but there, its called "come in number 54, where are you??" I think dave's guitar shines on that version.......... but its a studio track, and you are probably going with live studio tracks, I would assume....... but anyways...
All the versions are great, But the first time I heard the song was listoning to Ummagumma..so it's the one that sticks out in my mind.
first time I heard the song was on pompeii....... a buddy of mine let my brothers and I watch the movie..... but he said it sucked!! and I watched in awe...... this was quite a few years ago....
I dont know if I would actually call that a concert, per say........ the only people they played for were those corpses who were buried under ash......
I would say Ummagumma for two reasons: 1. Dave tries to hit a falsetto note at the end of the Pompeii performance and doesn't quite pull it off. Not a big deal, I know, but whenever I hear it I cringe. Plus whenever I'm watching and they start to play it it's always at the back of my mind that it's going to come in a few minutes and I'll be pissed off again. 2. Roger goes on far too much with his 'Careful...careful...careful' at the start. Again I'm nitpicking, but you know, I just find that these little details spoil an otherwise good performance. On another note, if you don't watch Pompeii with a decent sound system you won't get the same quality as the Ummagumma one. Sorry to be a boring pedant.
I say Ummagumma, because it's more powerful and exciting!!!! On Pompeii, it's slower and the only thing that really makes it exciting it Roger's screams and the footage of the volcanoes.
i've never herd the pompei version, but on ummagumma, its just sick. i love the screme, its so primal and delcious.
POMPEII forever!!! I visited the ruins many times and each time I could "see" the Floyd in my 3rd EYE!
