Go to the library. Look at the ads in magazines from the '50's onward. The American Dream is what the people in the ads were living. You can see how the Dream changed.

February 15, 2006 How has the American Dream Adapted over the century? America is known as the "land of opportunity." Many people believe that the American Dream is the ability for someone to be successful in receiving his or her desires of money, health and happiness in order to live a comfortable, financially stable life. Many people do not share equivalent views on the American Dream, for a persons view on the dream depends on his background, ethics and morality. The American Dream has adapted over the years, but still stands on its original surface; people want to make money and be happy. The American dream has evolved over time due to: changes in morals, values, opportunities and the rising costs of living. Back in the early 1900's, the American dream was that the man of the house was the one who worked and earned money for his family. The wife was a stay at home mother who took care of the household chores and the children were to be raised as well groomed and well educated. In the play write Death of a Salesmen, Willy Loman -the main character- has the dream to be a successful salesmen, ""Cause what could be more satisfying than to be able to go, at the age of eighty-four, into twenty or thirty different cities, and pick up the phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people?"(81). He believes that through hard work, one can achieve the loyalty and respect they deserve in society. Willy worked to raise money for his family while his wife stayed home and completed the household chores. Willy and his family are a clear definition of what the American dream was in the early 1930. Today, both the male and female hold equal roles in the household. In order to pay today’s bills, both persons must work, for example: both of my parents work, both of my friends parents work and so on. Steve Galpern once noted, in his paper Downsizing the American Dream, "As real incomes shrink, people are forced to work harder and longer, both parents in families must hold full time jobs and less time is left for leisure and relaxation." Because many people have two working parents, the father figure and mother must both find the time to take care of the household chores whenever possible. There is more reliance between the sexes in America today. The American dream went from having only the males in the house employed and the women staying home, to both parents working and splitting the house work equally, which demonstrates how the American Dream has adapted since the early 1900. Families with two employed parents still believe they have reached the American dream, for the American dream of today is to be financially stable and happy. Becoming financially stable gets tougher as time passes bye. This is due to the rising cost of living caused by over population and limited resources. . The cost of living is constantly rising making it harder for one to achieve the American dream of financial prosperity. Because the cost of living is rising, it causes both adults in a household to work. The American Dream has adapted People must adjust to the cost overpopulation In the past, some had the view that the American dream was that through hard work and determination, one can achieve financial prosperity. Today, people like to take the easy way out and technology helps them do so. Technology has spiraled into new areas of communication and transportation, allowing people to complete their everyday tasks in quicker, more efficient ways. In Deborah Crawford’s article Ten Reasons to Work from Home, she states that people work from home because of the "Freedom, in most cases, to set your own hours and work when you want to work. You can work when you are most energetic, whether that’s 10 am or 10 pm. You can take off to run errands or go see your kids’ school play. I becomes about you productivity, not about your "face-time" in the office" (BellaOnline’s Small Office/Home Office Editor). The internet allows people to work from home and accomplish their dream in a quicker way while maintaining their homes. Technology has made it easier for people to reach the "American Dream." Because of technology, the American Dream has expanded with new ideas of finding a comfortable life, by working at home. John Melloncamp wrote a song, Pink Houses, based on his interpretation of the American Dream. In his song he demonstrates how in the past, the lady of the house was the only who did the cleaning, "And there’s a women in the kitchen cleanin’ up the evening slop." The women’s role in the household is to be a "maid" and clean up after others. In his song, Melloncamp also sings about how people work hard in order to live comfortable lives, "Go to work in some high rise, And vacation down at the gulf of Mexico." Melloncamp demonstrates the American dream by saying that if you work hard good things will be rewarded. In the chorus of the song, "Oh but ain't that America for you and me Ain't that America we're something to see baby Ain't that America, home of the free Little pink houses for you and me" Melloncamp sings that in America you must work hard for your rewards. The little pink houses represent the perfect life in which you will receive if you work hard. America is known as the home of the free and when Melloncamp sings, "Ain’t that America, home of the free," he is talking about the freedom to be all you can be. Melloncamp’s song is a clear definition of the American dream because is states that when you work hard you can be anything you wish to be with the rewards of money, health and happiness. Although times have changed and the American dream has adapted for society today, it still stands on it’s main surface; people wants to make money and be happy.
