I'm sorry people to bother you with stupid questions like this one, but I'm so confused! What is baking soda? You see I'm Dutch and I'm not sure how to translate it. My dad has got this bag of salt that says "SODA" but on the back it has this big giant black X meaning danger! The list of ingredients says "natrium carbonate". I thought ok I'm not gonna brush my teeth and wash my hair with something irritating!?
So.. what is it? Is it sodium carbonate? Or is this really this stuff? Is it salt? Is it powder? Do you use it for cooking? Can I find it at the cake devices in the supermarket? Or is it for cleaning and should I look in the cleaning section? Is it for your stomach? All these dutch websites give different translations! One of them said that it;s somehow both natrium AND sodium carbonate? Geez!

"soda" can be any variety of caustic substances.
For calcium bicarbonate (arm and Hammer etc) it would be only one ingredient,. It is sold with baking supplies. in Dutch or German speaking countries, it could well be natrium BIcarbonate.

*******What you have is washing soda or soda ash, which is used in laundry and dyeing. DO NOT INGEST!!!!!
a chem site I looked up says natrium is Latin for sodium -- the symbol for sodium is Na.
to complicate further, Natrium (registered trademak) is a company that sells sodium bicarbonate.
