Would you consider muscle cells grown via a sterile culture tank in a laboratory, without any harm to any animals or any animals involved, be considered vegetarian (if used for food)? Would animals rights people have any problem with this?

I know, kinda of a wierd question. Since it is technically meat but not coming from a animal.

I'm sure this has been brought up before and resulted in a huge thread!
Anyway, I would still not eat this 'meat'. It would obviously be GM and they would 'have' to test it on animals before feeding it to the public, which is animal cruelty. The ethics seem all wrong to me, what about the animal that gave the muscle in the first place? Would it be sacrificed for this science? If not, what would happen to it later on? Lots of questions!

Is artificially grown muscle tissue still meat?

Can it be called meat, if it isn't taken from an animal, if it isn't a part of an animal?

Or is it just artificially grown muscle tissue?

-- Regardless ... could it be healthy? I highly, HIGHLY doubt it. And even if it was healthy, the nature of meat itself is unhealthy. For at *least* this reason, I would not eat synthetically grown muscle tissue.

I can't think of meat as being good or edible anymore, no matter where it comes from. It's all the same to me--muscle tissue.

If this ever becomes reality I'll be taking a small sample of (my own) hip muscle and living the rest of my life as a cannibal.

Ewww, yuck! Whether or not it could be considered meat, I wouldn't wanna eat it!

I don't really like TVP either, and that's not nearly as... tampered with?

Give me a bowl of rainbow-colored veggies, or a baked potato or just about ANYTHING that grew from the ground & I'll eat it. Those weird things that grew in a lab somewhere? No that's a science experiment, not supper!

It is a reality. They don't have the taste or texture "quite right" yet, but it is most definitely a reality. Originally, this began as an experiment to find a good, sustainable, healthy protein source that could be created aboard space stations. Personally, I wouldn't do it. I try to stay away from all foods GM, and this shit is GM in a BIG way!

Really, my problem with meat is more in the industry of it - I don't think it's healthy for anyone, the way it's become. For a while I pondered the possiblilty of "just" easting meat that's free-range, or that friend's hunted, or comes from friendly-farms. But for me, unless I make the distinction "I don't eat meat AT ALL" it just becomes far to easy to go drive through Wendy's and get a double bacon...

No, I doubt I'd eat meet that was produced in some lab...it doesn't sound healthy, and frankly, it just sounds plain yucky. :p
