    aloha,
i have just recently been hearing tidbits of information floating around about this festival.. and my ears have perked up i suppose!
i beleive the website is www.burningman.com
Has anyone been to this festival within the desert? im not sure the exact location...sorry about that..
If you have attended, or know some information as far as what would be useful for newcomers to know about this festival, or even just information on staying in the desert, its welcome!

I have a friend who goes to it... I'm so jealous. Anyway, it's about 150 miles north of Reno, and well, since you already have the website, I don't know what else to add. The second I move out I'm going to go every year.

    i go.

for basic desert servival at burning man you need:

shelter. shelter is offered everywhere. but you'll probably want your own. there's lots of wind and you're guaranteed at least 1 or 2 real duststorms. don't worry though, there's lots of calm, too. but you need something sturdy. i don't recommend a big tent unless it's made for major wind resistance. i prefer to get a pretty small tent especially now cuz i go with people who build larger chill structures. you don't really need to care about modisty or anything (lol), nakedness and such is absolutly normal there.

be prepaired for extreme cold and hot weather. the days are hot as hell and the nights are cold as hell. seriously... blankets. lots of warm ones.

food. you're basic camping supplies. playa (the dust that covers everything, litterally) gets into everything, so keep that in mind.

water. they stress water like a motherfucker. i think they tell you to bring a bit too much cuz i never end up drinking it all and i'm constantly drinking it. a camel pack would be great (they're the water packs you wear on your back with a tube to draw water from).

skin protection. cuz you will get burned. the great thing is that by the 3rd day, the playa has become a part of your skin, if you havent found a way to wash, and acts as a pretty damn good sun block. i've only ever used sunblock there on my first day, but i have really tan absorbing skin so i'm not saying everyone should go that way.

lung protection. like i said, the playa gets in everything, including in your lungs if you don't wear some sort of dust mask. bandanas work well enough. there's this thing, called playa lung... it can add extereme discomfort to your acid trip and it really sucks. i know from being really stupid one year and not taking the playa as seriously as i should have. there is a type of nose filter device that clips to your nose. they're awsome cuz you can't really see them and they work really well. i dunno where to get em, i'm sure you could figure it out.

    transportation
. it's a BIG place. i think last year was like, 40,000 people, that's almost the size of the town i live in (45,000). you'll most likely get blisters from walking around and still, you won't see everything, heh. so most people bring bikes. there's other ways around, like the party busses n such but yeah...

all this makes it sound horrifieing, but it really doesn't get in the way. it's just the way of life there, it comes naturally.

i can't think of anything other than that. of course, there's more but that's just basic playa survival from my own experiences. there is a lot of info online. ...people need to learn how to use google.

you'll be called a virgin and asked to step out of your car. you will then proceed to the virgin bell and smack it as hard as possable with something like a crowbar. after that, a flock of e-heads in big fury coats and hot chicks come to give warm hugs and welcomes. after they give you a buncha classy lookin info, you get back in and find a camp.

there's just so much to explain about what it's like to be at bm that it is honestly difficult. a lot of burners just shut up when the topic comes up because to accuratly describe bm to someone who's never been to it is entirely impossable. it's like nothing else on this planet, honestly. in that little description, i left out like 5 notable detales just cuz it would go on forever and i'd have to get all into it. ...not to talk it up too much, though, i mean, lame/shitty stuff will happen there but it tends to happen a lot less.

i'm in great favor of people going to bm. it changes people's lives and opens minds.

it's funny though... i've only gone 2 years, so far, but i think it's changed a little. the party scene keeps growing at the expense of respect for equipment and the playa (drunken fuckheads pissing on the ground. it's always nice to know that the whole ground is this nice clean floor thats completely safe to walk on because people take litter (moop) and the eco-safety seriously. but it seems like that mentalitiy is dieing while the parties grow). it's kinda cool though... sometimes you will walk through 4 or 5 full-blown raves to get to the portapotties (wich are an adventure in themselves).

oh god.. it's happening lol... the burning man rants... it will end here.

I would really like to go to this. Heard it's gotten commercial over the last few years though. It'll probably end up like Glastonbury. Still it's in America and I'm in Ireland so that's the main reason I don't go.

i know what you mean... i live in minnesota and the trip there sometimes seems like it shouldn't be worth it. but somehow it is.

i hate to imagen burning man becoming totally-for real commercialized. they're not doing it on pourpose... it's just happening. they want everyone who wants to be there to be there. so the bigger it gets, the more they'll accomedate. ...it'll probably just happen.:(

i have to doubt that they'll (by "they" i just mean Larry Harvey and bm "official" typs) go into commercializing though... since so much counter culture and anti mass media happens there.

Well Glastonbury has been going since the early 70's and it's meant to be really commercial now, but alot people say certains fields and that are still true to the cause and it's still worth going to. That's over 30 years on! How long has burning man been running?

hey! wow...thank you for delving into the subject, and bringing further light to it...i gleaned a lot from your information synaptic....basically, be ready for extreme weather changes? kinda sorta...hot cold..i am sorry, i havent had any sleep ,yet! and trying to make sense, not easy...for myself,im still weighing it...200 bucks is a lot of money for me, and going alone, do you recommend that plan?..goin to a regional burning man i was thinking might be a viable option...im sure not the all encompassing experience the black rock desert one is though...
i first heard about the bm thing in a movie called modern tribalism..the man who was part of starting burningman said the festival had a very spiritual focus, burning unwanted things with the man etc...
he also said a lot of people did not get their vision for it, claiming it as a party, good time and less of a searching for something deeper...
and this movie was made back in 1998!
so, way back there it sounds like they were having problems of that nature...
    oh sigh..human existance...lol

heh, i read through my posts and i wouldn't blame anyone for not following. i dunno, i was prolly stoned or a little buzzed.

you can apply for a cheaper ticket if it's your first time. it would be about $90 (as opposed to $250). but the expence of getting there is another issue. i shouldn't be going, myself. as a person who lives paycheck to paycheck and even then hardly makes ends meet, i should put the money elsewhere... like bills... eh, fuck that. [IMG]

lots of people have spiritual experiences there. ...wich is only to be expected with all the tripping that goes on. you can get away from the parties. like i said, it's a really big place. you can go so far away that you can't hear any noise but you're still in the city. i'm happy enough with how, after about 3 days, i've totally accepted the place as my home and everything that happens is completely normal. it's leaving that's the mind blower. suddenly you're back in the "normal" world. you feel like you've just come back from another planet.

dude, are you serious?! 90 bucks as opposed to 250? wouldnt everyone just apply for virgin BM status then? thats crazy, they must really want newcomers...i was thinking, to carpool to the location, or grab someone and hitchhike, as you can see, i still cant let go of the idea! lol..it sounds kinda like, a crazy circus like atmosphere, unreal, where everyone dresses up carnivalish..hard to explain my visualization..
