Bad behaviour in ANY breed is caused by the way they were raised, punished, or genetics...

I have met alot of very sweet Rotties, some very dumb ones, and some really aggressive ones.. You cant just say they are all one way, thats breedism.

I have a rottie called Katie. She hasn't been neutered and still has her tail. She is protective of me and my family and respects the authority of other people in our house, and LOVES kids. Sadly she's getting on a bit now and has arthritis in both her right legs, so I don't think she's very long for this world. If I can dig any pics out I might post them up.

I find that because rotties have such a bad reputation, a lot of the people who choose to own one do so because they want a hard-as-nails dog. Obviously anyone who chooses a dog for this reason is going to bring out the aggressive attributes of their pet. In my experience with Katie and other rottweilers they are extremely intelligent, loyal and protective dogs. My dog never starts fights, but she has been known to protect my family from aggressive people or other dogs, not through violent means, but for chasing them off or pinning them to the ground. The only times I've ever seen her do anything that could be called violent were stamping on a spider (because I wouldn't let her eat it) and staying completely still until a housefly got just a little too close, then SNAP! It was Katie dinner.

I read somewhere that they were originally bred by the Romans as guards for their cattle, anyone able to confirm this?

Yes rotties are so loving if only some ppl would give them the time, most rotties are just used for guarding or breeding when theres so much more u can do with your dogs for e.g they love walks and playing around in big fields i know this from past expierience with them and i can garantee that rottweielrs are very loving dogs, i mean yes i know theres been a few attacks on ppl, some ppl have even died after previous attacks but yet theres always 2 sides to every story and these dogs must have been provoked my 1 rottie samson use to run rings around me and my brother in the park yeas ago just to make sure no one came near us but this isnt being agressive or threatning they are very powerful protectors and if provoked then can get agressive but other than that what u said about pinning dogs to the floor this is an act of sending out messages to other dogs for e.g. my scobby didint like others comming near me at all especially in the night he would raise his head and give out a message by growling but buy other dogs approaching you or your propaty is tresspassing to your dog so its bound to give out a message buy attacking.

PS aw id love to see pics of ure rotties please do post them on my site so that i could have a look at them!!

YES rottweilers were used for guarding, protecting and hunting down wild boar or live stock but most of all they were originally bred in rottweili for bringing down soilders in the army thats why rottweilers are known to have high agression towards invaders/tressparsers.

I'll never change the opinion of someone who starts a thread because she wants a particular answer, but as a former dog foster parent to three Rotts, reasonably well socialized (I was concerned about their stance toward kids of a certain size, so they needed a different trainer than I) and a wolf hybrid, I am quite disturbed by the rotts in my neighborhood. I've been cornered and I had a small bite (I feel it was a menace that got too close.)
Really, the owner is so very important, but like teh pit breeds, who keeps tabs on the owners?

An animal bred to work will retain those characteristcs. Anyone with such a dog needs to be aware and honor that working past (or wild part of a hybrid. I no longer support hybrid breeding at all. Linus, the wolf-shepard mix I lived with for a while, was an accident and never learned full dog or wolf behaviour. My sweetie's ex stole him. I heard he was put down for attacking a 5 yo child.)

I adore rotties, and all sorts of large dogs. I grew up with an enormous german sherperd, and thus never had a fear of dogs - and they in turn have been really friendly to me, including a number of "dangerous breeds" such as pitbulls.

THANK YOU most ppl just misjudge most breeds of dog such as pitbulls, rottweilers, german shepherds and most large breeds. when really it depends on how their owners bring them up and how they are trained, breeds like akitas and rottweilers are just big powerful breeds which need alot of knowledge and a sensible owner not a village idiot.

I still wouldn't want one in my neighborhood. The owner may be responsible or he may not be.
