I want to expand my vision of ska, so what better way than this. So, basicly name any good ska groups. I'll start. Bandits of the Acustic revolution Catch 22 (same as BOTAR) K-OS Beduin soundclash mustard plug some NOFX Less than Jake here's a good ska site : ska is dead
catch 22 is an ok ska band, they scored that album keasby nights with vocalist tomas k. he left the band and started BOTAR which he covered a catch 22 song he wrote, and also played a song called heres to life, which his next band would then improve on, this band being streetlight manifesto, check them out. also deals gone bad, the toasters, the specials, westbound train.
Five Iron Frenzy (though broken up and christian) Skatalites I Voted for Kodos ( good new band) Skanking pickle to name just a few i gotta run to school though
I'm kinda lazy to look and see who's been listed, so here's my list: Streetlight Manifesto Catch 22 Authority Zero (More PUnk Though) Axis of Evil Monkey Jacket Bonegun Isolated Victims Less Than jake The Skatalites Room 503 (My friend's band) Conspicuous Consumption (Another great local band) Fandangle Skankin' Pickle Slow Gherken A Billion Ernies Chubby Tuff Operation Ivy The Planet Smashers The Aquabats HC Bands The OC Supertones Babylove & The Vandangos Long Shot Hero Offbeat in Suburbia Drive Thru Pharmacy The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Bob Marley (He has some ska hits) Patent Pending Mustard Plug Big D and The Kids Table The Superspecs The Flaming Tsunamis Sublime Save Ferris Eleven Penny Life Downsized The Skeletones MU330 8pt Quake Kushak RX Bandits Five Iron Frenzy I Voted for Kodos I have more, so if this isn't long enough, let me know, because I got a lot more.
yea thats probobly all you need to know of 3rd wave, saw some 1st wave on there too, good to know someone knows that bob marley shot out some ska (simmer down anyone?) but i definatly dont think some of those are worth checking out, i mean flaming tsunamis? eh... and regarding your sig, how old are you? i was 13 when i started coming here haha.
13 and yeah, I included some very iffy bands on there, but I mean, even though they aren't like streetlight or anything, they'll get better, and they're still ska.. there are a few 1st waves on there although the majority is 3rd wave, here's my response if your looking for more 1st wave: http://www.live365.com/stations/242657 That's an online free ska radio that plays pretty much all 1st wave stuff. They do throw in some 2 tone and 3rd wave stuff too, but they play a lot of great 1st wave bands like the skatalites and some marley ska hits.
3rd wave isnt that great, i mean what makes streetlight so amazing is pretty much whats in the lyrics. 2nd wave was good, 1st is the best, you got desmond dekker, skatalites, ethiopians.
all ska is good...... i went through a phase where that's all i listened to.. i kind of grew out of it, but i still listen to it all the time
I agree, 1st wave is probably the best, but really, I like all ska. A pro about 3rd wave is that there's a lot more active 3rd wave bands, especially around where I live. But honestly, I love all ska..
Dont know if I'd call K-OS ska...either way he kicks ass...got both of his albums. Reel Big Fish The Specials The Toasters Voodoo Glow Skulls Bosstones Ska is kick ass. -dave
Here is another good list I've made. it may include some bands from my previous list, but this one categorizes each so you can pick bands that are more your style.. 1st wave The Skatalites Bob Marley (Argueable) Cluet Johnson & The Blues Blasters (Probably won't find much on them) 1st wave (3rd wave that has a 1st wave sound) Hepcat Let's Go Bowling The Slackers Pressure Cooker The Allstonians Christian Ska Five Iron Frenzy The W's The O.C. Supertones The Insyderz NY Punk/Ska Choking Victim Leftover Crack Ska/Punk Big D and The Kids Table Streetlight Manifesto Catch 22 Long Shot Hero The Flatliners Less Than Jake Ska/Hardcore/Screamo The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Some metal) A Billion Ernies The Flaming Tsunamis (Metal, but the upbeat is there) Popular 3rd Wave Catch 22 The Aquabats Sublime Operation Ivy Fishbone Rx Bandits Goldfinger Mustard Plug Just Starting Room 503 Conspicuous Consumption Downsized Hootchi and the Go Get Ems Ska/Reggae Babylove & The VanDangos The Next Best Thing Bob Marley Rocksteady Influence The Melodians The Ethiopians Desmond Dekker The Maytals Old Bands Making a Comeback The Toasters The Planet Smashers Slow Gherkin Other (Tough Categorization) Authority Zero Chubby Tuff (Probably simply 3rd wave but sounds a little Surf Rockish) and: www.ajr-bms.com/ska That's my site, it's a list of bands in alphabetical order, with ratings and their style alogn with links to their music...I need to add a lot more bands, but there's a decent number now...
sorry punk, HUGE dissagrements with that list. bob marley is not arguably ska, he frickin STARTED playing ska, his studio band was the skatalites. desmond decker, toots and the maytals and the ethiopians are NOT rocksteady, maytals are mainly reggae, desmond decker is ska ethiopians are reggae with some ska. choking victim and leftover crack are the same band and though there are upstrum guitar chords in a few songs, dont call them ska, thats like calling sublime ska or no doubt rocksteady. for your list of 3rd wave that sounds like first wave, they sound like 2nd not first. with your earlier post you showed that you had some knowledge of ska/reggae/rocksteady/dub, but with your beautiful post, sorry. you really must not go to many shows. ska is something you cant learn about just buy downloading music, go to the shows, ive been to 4 in the past month, once your in the way of life yous gots its down.
I do go to shows.. I am aware that Marley's studios band was the skatalites. I only put argueably up there because there are a lot of people that refuse to believe that marley is ska which baffles me.. And about the Ethiopians, Maytals, Desmond Dekker etc.., I put "Rocksteady influence" not meaning I categorize them as simply rocksteady, but that there music has a lot more apparent examples and proof of rocksteady influence in them. With choking victim and leftover crack, it's fine that I screwed that part up because that category is the one Im probably least familiar with, but you got me there, didn;t know they were the same. Going back to the shows thing you said, I do go to plenty of ska shows, mostly 3rd wave bands shows though. The scene near where I live is pretty low on anything that involves 2 tone or 1st wave, only 3rd wave shows around. I live very close to where streetlight manifesto is from (maybe a 10 minute drive away).
