i'm generally just an herb smoker, but a friend of mine is trying to get me to try shrooms... i was wondering if it's as intense as acid... i've had friends who almost killed themselves during bad acid trips, and one friend who dropped acid and never came back from it.. he was an ivy league college student and now he's in a "state home" and has been for over a year... i know that these things only happen to a few people out of many, but i will never try acid because, with my luck, something like that would happen.... could shrooms cause something like that?

That's really unfortunate about your friend. Psychadellics can bring out previously unsees mental issues that were lying just under the surface. Check family history here. A key factor in avoiding a 'bad trip' the setting. Be with people you love and trust, in a home. Maybe for the first time you should have an experienced tripper who is NOT on drugs supervise you and make sure things go well.

yes, the shrooms are no different as far as your concerns go. shrooms can be just as intense and can make you lose it. however, i should tell you that the people who "don't come back" are the people who wouldn't have come back from life in general--they turn bipolar or schizophrenic. schizophrenia is 1/1000 or 1/2000 people (i forgot which) and this number is no different in people who have tripped LSD and shrooms. the point is, if you're going to become schizophrenic, the shrooms or the acid are just an early trigger. if you yourself have no significant risk of mental illness, then these drugs will not cause you to go "insane" or anything. also, note that you seem scared about doing these drugs. that's a no-no right there--you don't want to be tripping and become fearful with worry, it's not a good combo. goodluck.

Shrooms can cause it yep, and Purple Gel is right.

High (and I mean HIGH) doses of mushrooms go deep and can be quite intense.. (think: ego loss, 10 hour trips+)

Ya I took like 5 grams my first time, and lost my body, forgot who I was and generally got really freaked out. If I wasn't such a laid back person I probably would of really lost it, as it is I just barely clung to sanity haha, there was no danger but the fear can cause danger.
If you take shrooms 2grams should be enough your first time, try not to think about anything you dont like or that may make you worry. Just have fun and look at things move around.
Weed can also cause the schizophrenia to come out, acid and shrooms just do it faster.
I also prefer acid to shrooms, much nicer, smoother, no nausea.
