First, those numbers are wrong, the US has around 10,000 nuclear weapons. And the problem is the same as the problem with guns. You can't undo the invention of nuclear weapons. So they will never be completely gotten rid of.

 

Unfortunately even if they were destroyed the half life of the materials involved amounts to hundreds of years

 

Hundreds? Thousands. Hundreds of thousands. There have been nuclear weapons used in Iraq that have caused radiation that will remain there for 250,000 years. Which means that for all intents and purposes, Iraq is unlivable. An Iraq free of all radiation cause dby these nukes is, as I said, too far away to matter to any of us.
