    Hey guys,

I know a few of you work in women's health and I just wanted to ask your advice.

My period isn't due for another week or so (I had my last one start on about the 21st of Jan) but for the last three days I've had some pain on my left side, about where I normally would have period cramps. its been accompanied by pain in my lower back, just like I normally get when I have my period. But its only on my left side and it comes and goes. I also haven't got my period so its only pain. I don't know exactly where my ovaries are but, using my layman's knowledge, I think the pain is approximately where my left ovary is... (perhaps I'm wrong).

Just wondering if any of you guys have any idea what this is or if its urgent or any advice.

    thanks. :)

Any chance you might be pregnant?

    very very small one.

I had my period, as I said, last january and I've been regular for the two or three months before that (as far back as I can remember). Also, my boyfriend and I use condoms (yes I know that they're not 100% effective but still...) and we've only had sex once in the last two months because I've been away overseas.

so I don't think its pregnancy.

Perhaps you are ovulating? Normally you ovulate 2 weeks prior to the onset of your mesntrual period (or 2 weeks after your period, whichever way you prefer to look at it). Since you had your last period the 21st of January, depending on how long your cycles are, you may just be experiencing symptoms of ovulation. What you are describing is exactly how I feel during ovulation.

Keep an eye on it though. If it doesn't ease up within the next 24 hours, you might want to think about scheduling an appointment with your OB/GYN, or at least putting in a call.

I'd suggest you talk to your doctor about it. Do you have painful menstrual cramps? Pain during menstruation is NOT NORMAL! (sorry for the caps, but this is something I am very passionate about, and I am yelling.) Do you ever have pain during or after intercourse? Again, this is not normal. If your doctor tells you these things are normal, find a new doc.

Pain on the left hand side of your abdomen could be intestinal. It could be anything from diarreah to gas to constipation or just that you ate something that does not agree with you. But pain in your lower left hand side, right before your period, if you ever experience cramps or pain with bowel movements or urination during your period, or pain during or after intercourse, points to there being something else wrong. If any women in your family have endometriosis (diagnosed or not) and painful menstrual cramps, you need to address that as a very real possibility.
