If I was going to send an envelope to someone here in town, what is to stop me from putting the desired recipient's address on the return address and put either a fake address that cannot be sent, no stamp, or something else that would result in the PO "returning" the envelope to me. I can see how they wouldn't "return" something to Kansas or LA, but for local purposes would never know.
I guessing the only thing keeping people from doing it would be mail fraud...but I doubt they would go to the trouble of prosecuting anyone for that.
Put the person's address you want it to go to as the sender and your address like it was supposed to go to you. Then drop in in a public mailbox. I bet they deliver it to your friend thinking they were returning it to the sender... if you put the same address in both it would be blatant what you were trying to do.
Right, that's what I said. Ten steps ahead of you, man. Just like if it was a very distant place, they would bet it hadn't gotten that far with nobody noticing lack of postage.
And just remember that mail fraud is a federal offense. But I hear the penitentiary at Ft Leavenworth is a lovely place...
See I wasn't sure if that was actually considered mail fraud. But even if...they got nothing on you... You know they don't go around prosecuting everyone that forgets to put a stamp for mail fraud conspiracy.
