Anyone know anything i can do with a major in natural resources and environmental science? I recently that as my major and it took me a while to get over the fact that it doesnt sound as prestigious as an engineering major or something, but I guess I've got to go with what interests me. Anyway, whenever people ask my major they want to know what i plan to do with it and I feel pretty lame saying I have no clue.
Say you plan to wipe your ass with it. See, that shows that you are resourceful and care about the environment. (and it'll get them off your case without you having to feel lame)
I am an environmental major and I get those same questions. And I tell them, there are many options like "becoming a DNR officer, work for an environmental advocacy group, being a lobbiest, working at an environmental camp, etc." and then I say, "There are so many possibilities, so I'm keeping my options open." They just smile and nod at that and you rarely get anymore comments about it from them. Go to ecojobs.com...they have a lot of environmental jobs listed there...so you can get more ideas. Good luck!
There are a LOT of things you can do. It just depends on what avenue you want to go with it. Do you want to work international relations? You could help save the rainforest (excuse the cliche) in South America or Southeast Asia, help stop desertification in Africa, etc. etc. Especially with the rainforest, you could get involved with groups that help Brasil manage their resources better (something I'm really considering doing). Domestically you could lobby (lobbiests are the scum of the earth though..), work for the government in a national park, help with park planning in urban areas, work in for a environmental organization, and tons more. And you could always become a science teacher. That's one of the good things about that major, in most places its considered "inter disciplinary" so it covers lots of ground in various areas so there is so much you can do with it.
