I've recently gotten into Human, All Too Human by Nietzsche, and one of the things that intrigued me the most was his concept that the idea of a metaphysical world comes from the primitive idea that when you dream you are experiencing a second world that is just as real as the waking world. Putting it simply, and less in German, he says that dreaming and waking allowed us to make a distinction between physical and metaphysical. Before then, when people asked why it was raining they imagined gods that made it rain, but at first they didn't imagine the metaphysical gods that most modern religions worship today. Instead they imagined an actual, physical creature up in the sky. He also mentions that for millenia it was believed that the dead were not gone forever because the dead sometimes appear to the living in dreams, and the dream world is just as real as the waking world, therefore the dead merely shift over to the dream world. Which is stunningly close to our concept of heaven. What do you think of the concept?
i have never been able to get into reading nietchie but one of the things dreams might very well be aside from an off line running of simulations is a kind of internet of the spirit i actualy believe this is quite possible and when baha'u'llah writes of the universe being folded within us in them, this is what i choose to interpret as his meaning of this to me. though as i have also observed this may also very well not be the case with all of them. dreams are many things: besides simulations and connections they may also be sometimes classrooms and more often then any one thing else mine anyway simply enjoyable little mini vacations absolutely essential to remaing sane the rest of the day =^^= .../\...
I think it makes some sense, dreams can contain an essence of heaven or hell, although, if this concept is true, then why do we have access to this second world? Why do our minds slip into this world every night and linger among the dead?.. Some subconscious quest to connect with those that cease to exist? To understand a life beyond death?... I know that in some sense you can control what you dream, do anything you want..through lucid dreaming that is..., In this life we have the laws of physic to limit us, we have our consciousness to remind us that it is real. I dont see how it could be another world, when we have control to some degrees of what goes on...but i dont completely disregard the idea...
When you sleep, and consequently dream, your brain basically stops receiving input from your environment. The focus of the brain transfers to recorded information (memories), and creates input for itself in this sense. A range of low frequency brainwaves (as opposed to higher frequency, waking, brainwaves) are required for dreaming activity. The brain does not completely shut down all its electrical connections/signals, but it is not engaged in the complex and demanding task of analyzing physical reality; So it lingers in a rested state where it processes information that has already been gathered. The content of one's dreams is a reflection of the individual having them. Wondering what will happen to the spirit of a close friend/relative who has passed away, could very possibly be enough to produce dreams of this person, even ones that directly relate to the topic of life after death.
