That's right! My good friend and roommate Jon just showed me the entry for Red #40 on Wikipedia:

Allura Red AC is another name for FD&C Red #40.

So I went out to a couple other sources to confirm this, and found these quotes from a google search:

Now, that's three reputable sources that all say Red #40 is in fact vegan, and that cochineal carmine is the red dye that is created from beetle juice.

Does this information feel strange to any other vegans out there besides me?

sure, whatever you eat, it's cool, but I will stick to my organic vegetarian health food

lol... whether or not it's vegan Hikaru... there are other reasons for some of us to avoid it.

It causes uncontrollable hyperactivity in some children. Not like a little extra sugar will do, I mean literally bouncing off the walls, near-tourettes style tantrum fits & a complete & utter inability to do anything but "buzz" until it leaves the system.

That's "mom" for ya. Always looking out for me. Rather, always looking to keep me off the walls so she doesn't get a headache, hahahah! :D

-- And not that I would prefer Red #40 over organic vegetarian health food, but I'm a poor working class college student. I really have almost NO choice in the matter whatsoever. I HAVE to eat on campus because I don't have a car, and because I live on campus I HAVE to have a meal plan. I try to eat as organic as possible, but that just doesn't happen very often at college.

Oh I can assure you that my motives for keeping this out of my kids' diet are more than slightly selfish. Yeah I wanna be able to go through life without caffeine firmly in hand to keep the migraines at bay, but my kids are just sick after they "come down" off of a red40 rush. It's sick. I swear they act like they've been drugged!

Poor college student, trying to eat healthy. Oh, do I remember the days! I lived off of rice & frozen veggies for months. I was stuck with a meal plan too, but the year I was in college the governor shut the state down for over a month in 2-3 day blocks because of -60 degree weather. I was literally stuck in my dorm.

After eloping, DH & I ate like college kids for about the 1st 3 years of our marriage. Salads were a saving's grace, as were things like frozen veggies & in-season fruits. And other than that, it was rice. And loaded 'tatoes. One potato, 1/3c salsa, and 4-6 black olives was lunch for me most days. But it was GOOD! Heck, I did that while pregnant with my son... and so far I don't see any signs of permanent damage ;)
    love,
    mom

I think cochineal has become more expensive to make that coal derivatives.
I know that I couldn't afford conch purple even if i wanted it.
I tend to believe snopes. What did you find using the trade name? (look for a toxicity sheet)

and Hikky, get a small rice cooker. A little extra water for brown rice (and a bit longer cooking) and veggies to steam on top. I think I paid $25 for mine.

Yeah, I actually have a rice cooker and two bags of rice, lol. I might as well live off of rice right now.

Unfortunately, rice is about it. I can't even do the frozen vegetables thing, they just don't really even sell them on campus. =\

Walkable, maybe. Attainable without money, afraid not.
