My dreads are quite thin and recently I have been noticing that a lot of them are growing together, normally this wouldn't bother me but large grousp of them are joining (groups of 4 etc.). I don't want them to join and it makes my scalp feel so gross, how can I prevent this? In the past I have cut apart a few that I notice are joining, is this a good method?

Also; how can I keep my dreads round? They are flattening out more and more.

You can just keep an eye on them and if you notice the roots growing together, use the ripping method. But if you let them go too long without ripping them, you'll have to cut them if you want to keep them separated.

I like big fatties, so I just sort of let mine do their thing. I have one dready that used to be five dreadies. I call it my wisdom lock :)

Most of the flat ones are probably in back, huh?

Mine get flat in the back...just palm roll them if you want to keep them rounded.

yea dont cut them, just rip them :) if you cut *shudders* god knows you might miss and loose a whole lock!

yup - ripping means ripping. just find the hair(s) you want to rip, hold it in such a way that you´re not going to feel the tug on your scalp and tear it apart. and it will make a ripping sound.

Wow, ripping works much better then cutting and it's less risky. Thank you

I really wouldn't worry about a few growing together - a few "branchers" here & there always give a little character to a dready head - I used to rip and a lot but now I just let 'em go - now, however, I have quite a few "branchers"

Funny I found this thread, as I was on my little journey looking for a thread just like this...

My problem is, I have about TWELVE dreads all forming into one, on the back of my head. It's from sleeping, I know, but it looks kinda gnarly. It's been going for so long now, that the attached growth has grown probably about an inch or two. So yeah, they're pretty fuckin locked together. What should I do? Should I trrrryyyy cutting, to separate some of them? I know that I can't make them back into individuals, they way they've locked up, but I could possibly make a group of two or three congos. So, what should I do? Should I just leave them, and let them grow into one big ass lock, or should I give it a try?

I've noticed many times, that Andrew (Melvndoo) has a wicked ass congo in the back, similar to what mine is doing. Kinda gives me hope for my hair, because his locks are kick ass.

    Any help is appreciated.

Awwww, I think that's extremely cute, Annie. Wisdom lock, awwww. :)

there´s a few pics showing how my dreads combined

if you have new growth of an inch or two , i´d say it might be too late to do anything. depends on how thick it is, too. though, i´ve never really cut a thick dread apart before. the only one i ever did was this one:
the connections werent that thick - more of a webbing that i had a friend cut with scissors. that was the last time i let a pair of scissors touch my hair. the sound kinda made me shiver - it was really weird. they grew out just fine, too.

Yeah, hmmm, it's a pretty thick growth. About one or two inches long, and about 2 inches thick. Like, the roots of all the dreads are just mashed right in there. So, I'm fucked. I figured. But, that's okay, I'll have one mammoth dread in the back to sport. :D

My main concern is...the right side of my head has never really done that well. The left side looks wicked, lots of nice, thick dreads, but the ride side is kind of spindly, and has lots of tiny thin dreads, and TONNES of loose hair. Bugs the shit out of me. I dunno, I know I just need to give them tine, but it's been three years! The hell!?

Thanks for your help though, Drew. Your dreads are definetly an inspiration.

sleep on your other side. the thick ones are prly the side you sleep on your head. if u want a congo then keep it, if not i'd rip it apart or make small snippets. you can let the thin side of your head congo

Well, I managed to rip some of them away from the congo, but they themselves (about 4 of them) are forming one of their own. So, I'll have two ones right beside each other, still somewhat connected at the roots.

I usually always sleep on my back, and I think that's what's done it. I try to sleep on my sides, but usually just end up turning over in the night, anyway.

Hahaha, I think it's weird anyone can sleep on their tummy!!! It's not comfortable, what do you do with your head? Can't go face first into the pillow, and if you turn it to either side, it hurts your neck. At least for me, anyways!

I sleep on my side sometimes, but mostly it's on my back. Just the most comfortable!

Well, I did it. I managed to take the huge ass 12-dread congo, and split it into two. One 8-dread, and one 4-dread. They were connected by one little band type thing, that didn't quite go all the way to the roots. So, I made the hole a little bigger, and then grabbed the two congos, and ripped. Let me tell you, made me feel a lot more at ease, than if I had took scissors to it.

Still feels a little weird. Creeps me out, because it feels like I cut one off and it's dangling! Haha, but it's just because they're free of each other now, which they haven't been for a few months, now. I frantically checked the mirror like 7 times, to make sure I didn't fuck anything up! Haha.

    Thanks for the advice, guys!

I did that once. I let six or seven grow together. When they got pretty long (like maybe 2 feet long) it got too heavy. When I would wash it it would get so heavy that it would pull on my head and hurt.
