I'd like to get a pet fox. I'm interested in if anyone has any knowledge, links, sites, info concerning "foxes as pets". Is it possible?

    Thanks.

I agree, a fox is not a pet! It would be very cruel indeed to keep one in a house.

It is possible? Totally. I don't know if you've ever heard of them or not, but people have been breeding and keeping "fennec foxes" as pets for quite awhile now. They're those little foxes with those HUGE ears. Check out this site, but you'll have to check your area for local breeders -- I doubt you'll find any at your local Petsmart.

    www.angelfire.com/ut/fennecfox/breederdirectory.html

I don't know if that site still works, but it used to have a bunch of breeders. I myself don't have one and to be honest, I'm not sure how great of pets they make.. but it is certainly very possible.

    Hope that helped!

When I was a kid, my parents did wildlife rehab. We had a red fox baby for a while. He came to us sick and wasn't expected to make it as no vet at that time would treat a wild animal. He did make it. As I remember, he was dog like but still very much wild. At times, he behaved well and others he would bit over food. Anyway, here's a picture of him playing with a stuffed toy.

Glitter in the Sky- That is the most adorable little fox! I'm in love.

Ganga Goo Ninja- Thank you for the link! Yes, it still works.

To everyone else, I know that foxes are meant to live in the wild. I live out in the middle of the country with a large area of land. I don't think a fox would be too miserable with me...:p

It doesn't matter if the fox is going to be happy or if you think you can make him happy...wild animals are not for pets! They belong in the wild!

Foxes are predators. Would you keep a shark as a pet? A crocodile? Have any other small pets? Get a fox and you won't. It's like having a Jack Russell terrier with a thirst for blood. A nervous ball of energy that is efficient at killing and eating anything smaller than it is.

    Let go of the fantasy.

a fox will never be happy in captivity. wild animals need to be in the wild to be TRUELY happy.

Ever smelt a fox? they're pretty niffy. I walk round a lake everyday and always know when Mr Todd has been visiting, no mistaking his smell. When cubs arrive at the wildlife sanctuary they have as little human contact as possible, the belief being that wherever possible every creature should be returned to its natural habitat. Only ever known one captive fox, and that was for his own safety, too tame you see. They're best left in the wild.

And wasn't every animal we have as pets now once a wild species? They have pet foxes born and raised as pets they don't know the difference. I had a wild pigeon that couldn't fly. I tried to get him to fly, I tried to get him to leave, but he wouldn't. Maybe he could fly for all I know, but he liked it here with me. Here he didn't have to struggle to survive.
As far as foxes being predators, yeah so are cats, dogs, ferrets etc. Ever see a ferret look at a little kitten as food? I have I had to pull my ferret of my cat when she was a kitten he wanted her dead.

cats and dogs have been domesticated and they have changed over the course of thousands of years........a dog, although it still displays some wild behaviors, is not wild. a fox is a wild animals and even if raised in captivity remains wild. that is why no one will ever reccomend keeping a wolf as a "pet". because even even tho they may been born in captivity their wild wolf instincts come out as soon as they begin to mature and people have been killed.

a fox may not kill someone like a wolf would but its an ethical situation......is it ok to keep wild animals as our "pets" for our own gratification? no. (with the exception of people who *rescue* and rear wild animals at home)

funny the same person says wild animals belong in the wild. but it appears they have a pet rat.

as for finding a pet fox its easy depending on where you live. and you can even save ones life buying them as a pet. instead of letting it die for a fur coat. in Wisconson there is a few fox breeders that raise them for fur but they will live ones as pets also. check the web sites for exotic animal sales.....

or be like elle and others and live under the notion that they only belong in the wild and just them them die off . or get a unrelated pair raise some babies yourself and increase the population. they make intresting pets. but check your local laws about having them. if you get it illeagally tlocal or state police will take the animal and most likly put it to sleep. also check federal laws depending on the species and make sure who you buy it from is USDA LIC. most fur breeders have it. or make sure its just a hobby breeder if they only have one pair of animals and only sell limited number of offspring they didnt used to need a USDA lic. but that may all have changed since i was last involved with that type of stuff. here is a link to a exotic sale in the chicago area. but these types of sale are all over the country. http://www.geocities.com/lizardlady_dragonslair/website1004.html
one of the best sales is in macon Missouri lollei brothers auction house has exotic animal sales 3 times a year i think. i used to go there my self and even seen girraffes so just about anything can be found.

ohh and that person that commented about a shark or croc as a pet. sure why not?
if thats what your into and you can take care of it then go for it. isnt like any of these aniamls we are talking about are caught out of the wild anymore. maybe so in years gone by. but just isnot the case anymore. most come from breeding farms. even the crocs. gatorama in south central florida (palmdale area) raises gators and crocs for leather and meat. and also have a small roadside turist attraction for people to see them.

anyways belle donna good luck finding one it will be hard. and you will constantly have to deal with closed minded people like some on here. that want to micro manage everybodys life telling others whats rite or wrong. if you like send me an email with your location and ill let you know if i know a person or sale in your area. as i said in other threads here that usually resulted in disagreements with elle. dealing with animals was my familys buisness for many years, lions tigers bears monkeys even foxes
but mainly reptiles and yes even crocs.

ELLE asked......" is it ok to keep wild animals as our "pets" for our own gratification? " then answered herself with " no. (with the exception of people who *rescue* and rear wild animals at home) "

i just have to ask why is it wrong?
i have asked before but never gotten a good answer.
