I just got my BT phone bill and ive been scammed! If you use music download sites (Or porn sites) there's a pop up which hijacks your dial up and charges you £1.50 a min! Can you image if you was downloading music for a couple of hours or so??! [IMG]

Anyway, ive told BT they can go swivel! Im not paying it! They should have sent out warnings to people. (Not just a token warning in the back of their stupid update book that no one reads!) It's obvious they are quids in with the scam, hence their silence! Dirty *****!
Well, thought id warn you lot. Just make sure you have your 'puter set up to only dial up using your default connection. It was in the paper the other day that 20 or people in the same street were scammed this way.

    well...i don't how much it costs...for example £19.99 a month...and thats all we pay...no phone bill charge...no call charges...just the 20 quid a month...or whatever it is...so it wouldn't make any difference surely...

I pay £15.99 p/m to AOL. When i got my BT bill there was £18 for a 12 min call that i didn't make! Turns out when i was downloading music, a program of some kind hijacked the AOL dialer and replaced it with one which charges your phone bill, not your ISP. So as long as your puter is set up to only dial up from your default connection, you should be fine. :)

Diallers have been around for years, you have to actually download them for them to get on your machine though

4 what it's worth - if you've logged your complaint properly with bt they should refund the difference from your actual bill, they've done this with thousands of people already as they realise it's not your fault.

it's a bunch of net pirates operating on some island off the coast of africa, writing the dial up viruses that download themselves without authorisation - clever stuff!

to be fair to bt they've already paid the pirates without knowing about the scam before you've even recieved the bill. Theyre refunding thousands of peeps and footing the bill themselves so any profit they made from it is well gone. their's a lot of competition these days so they need to keep their customers sweet, it's also a good plug to try and get you onto broadband cos if ur on bb and your dialup is disabled your safe.. for now anyway.

Hmm, as soon as BT get one complaint they know which number the scam is going to, rather than cutting that number off after the first complaint they carry on charging customers until the people who are making the money out of the scam cancel the line, reason for this: BTs terms and conditions say that this is ok!!!

Yeah, BT are saying they don't know what the number is on my bill so they can't do anything about it. Yeah, well they will be building snowmen in hell before i pay the bill! I think they suck cos there are helping to make crooks rich and they should sort their **** out! I may as well on on BB cos it's only a few quid more than what im paying now. Ive never bothered before cos ive got 2 phone lines and i don't use my puter that much, but if it stops money grabbing a$$holes then i will do it. Funny that BT didn't send out a warning to all their customers to warn them of such a scam!

I had a virus that did that to my computer, a trojan. Download Zone Alarm, it'll let you choose which programmes on your computer are permitted to dial out or access the internet. The other thing you can do is call BT andget them to block premium rate numbers. It's a bugger, I blame capitalism myself....

Unfortunately not true they are now sneaking in in viruses and setting themselves up to dial out without you ever knowing they are there. Luckily I have broadband so don't have to worry about it anymore but It used to be there would be a pop up that set up a dialer but now they can scam you and do it without you knowing. BT have published it in most of the newspapers now so most people are aware and they are stating if it happens to you contact them right away. I hate all the assholes out there who have to fuck things up for others. The one old man I read about has never used his computer for anything but e-mail his son in AUstrailia so it isn't only happening to people who download stuff. So moral of the story is beware and like someone les said have BT block premium rate numbers.

As suggested, but make friends with Zone Alarm PRO. + get used to its settings + how to use it + also check your dial up number I.E don't let your PC Auto dial, make it pop up + ask you then U'll see the number which its dialing ;). + also, get a decent anti-virus proggy if U are file sharing lol. b.T.W, as for a server, try NTL ;) . As U get a LOT for your money :D . Just pay your bt line rental + the rest is amazing he he :sunglasse .
