I'm really in to theology, and I HIGHLY reccomend this book to anyone else who is similarly inclined. The authors' name is Karen Armstrong, and although it can be dry at times, the overall style is very concise, objective, and fascinating. For anyone interested in world religion, this is the book for you!
This is another one of my favorites. I think I have owned four different copies of this book, three of them I have given away. This is a really valuable book for the seeker. Karen Armstrong shows how the Judeo-Christian-Muslim conception of God has changed over the past 5,000 years as a reflection of how humanity's collective consciousness has grown. It doesn't say much, if anything (it has been about 8 or 9 years since I read it), about the Eastern religions. For that I would suggest What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula, The Living Buddha: An Interpretive Biography by Daisaku Ikeda, The Bhagavad Gita translated by Eknath Easwaran or Stephen Mitchell, and The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tsu, translated by Stephen Mitchell.
History of God and The Mystic Christ are both great reads, irrigardless, I think, of what your religious or spiritual path is. Very fascinating.
hey....check out an older book called the History of the Devil. Really good book about the historical propensity to call the "devil" anyone, anything that is in opposition to the powers that be. Good read, not dry at all!
