By far most people voted "YES! i want to just say "fuck off" to my normal life", but I get the impression that most of those people do not wander off with a backpack slapped on.

    Why?

I did this in the 70s from age 14 to 16...what a nightmare for my parents....there are so many pieces of people and places in my soul from doing so. Even now, almost 30 years later. Most good, some scars. I hope if anyone does this they would be safe, always....this is my prayer...I wouldn't wish some of my situations on anyone.

travel is one thing, but just vaporizing into the air is another....gotta keep your head, have a plan. lemme tell you disconnecting from everything sux big time. now going somehwere to plug into something that's there, that can be happening, as new folks will tend to dig your thing, what you can do, and who you are.

But just floating around from one place to another, society resists that, and makes it damn near impossible. the thing is, you are valuable to humanity and have something to contribute - if not to the system, then just to plain humanity! You don't want to scuttle that, but cultivate it in cooperationwith others that dig you. Go, find them!

May I ask what happened? I mean. . . how was it, and what did you do? I don't want to seem nosy, I'm just very curious.

I absolutely always feel this way. I've always been like that, moving my whole life....roots aren't my thing. I never had them and the thought makes me uneasy. Being stationed so to speak in Ohio for 3 years is far longer than I've ever stayed put in one place. It's driving me completely insane... I've left lots but always end up back here for one reason or another, lots of failed plans and sketchy folks. It's scary, I feel like I'm doomed to this damned city. :(
I'm leaving soon one way or another, perhaps in a month or so or maybe in the spring.
"Don't look back". That is key, I ALWAYS end up looking back...

If I didn't have so much responsibility, then I couldn't think of anything in the world I'd rather do. I wouldn't throw on a backpack and wander, but I'd definately get in the car and just drive. Now I would, however, love to backpack in Europe. That is my dream trip...:) I'd want a kind papa to travel with me though..I would get too lonely by myself.

For all those who think they can't do it on their own, that's not true. Don't be scared, if you are you'll never do anything in your life. Just stop talking about it and go for it. You don't even need a plan, just one destination and take it from there. Just make sure you've some emergency money or someone who you know can help you out. Anyway one can even survive without money, where there's a will there's away. I'll be gone again in a few months. I'm just getting some money together now to go again. I managed over 9 months in Asia on my own on a budget and came through it no problem, best time of my life!

Here's to more happy travelling!!! :D

Cheers, I like me sig too! :D As for the early 60's comparison, most people here will post saying they'd love to do it, but how many actually will?? Even if one does the thread will have been worth it though.
