I know im too young but i am interested in the peace corps. I think that it would be great to do voluntary work after highschool. You get to go to that country learn their culture help them out like with agriculture, teaching, hiv/aids awarness etc. and that must feel really great. anyone interested in it too? If ya need any info go here http://www.peacecorps.gov/

Actually, I hate to tell you this, but you need a college degree before you can join.

Wow, I just went on the site, and it sounds AMAZING! I would totally love to do this after all my schooling. Well, I don't know what's goin on because I'm Canadian and all but I'll find a way, somehow, someday.

i'm kinda interested right now. i dunno if i wanna do it, but i am thinking of it. when i did volunteer work down in Dominica, we met some of the Peace Corps people down there and they were really cool. I liked what they were doing and if i end up applying, i hope i can go back to Dominca.

you don't need a college degree. its helpful to get accepted in the program, but is not always needed. other things can qualify you, such as job experience, other volunteer work. but some jobs in the peace corps do need a degree. but again, its not absolutely needed to be accepted.

According to the website, all you have to do to be eligible to become a Peace Corps volunteer is be 18 years old, and be an American citizen. Of course, a college degree greatly helps your chance of becoming a volunteer.

I think I might do the Peace Corps in the future. But I don't think I'll do it immediatly I'm after finished with Japan. But I do think it's something worthwhile I should do.

FreakyJoe, I do hope you join the Peace Corps.

Well, that is true in part...

Here's the thing. You either have to have a degree, or some practical experience in something like farming or construction (etc). And it's very selective. I have a friend who's going next year (he has a BA in French).

If you want to do volunteer work straight out of high school, I recommend that you look at Americorps. It seems cool, you get a stipend and money for college in exchange for 11 months of work. Some conservation work, some work in schools, etc.

Or, if money's not your bag, check out Coolworks (www.coolworks.com) for volunteer listings :)

i remember reading something about joining the peace corps give you a college scholarship. i dunno...

i been wanting to join. but for all the wrong reasons, it seems. i want to get out of my boring life and do something worthwhile. im just worried that i only wanna do it for an adventure. :(

does it cost any money at all, in any way? i been saving up just in case, it doesn't really talk about this on the site i don't think...

Aside from the obvious warm and fuzzy feeling you get from helping those in need, Peace Corps also looks great on grad school applications.

Peace Corps is a great program, but like a couple other people have said, you need a college degree before they will consider you.

I have two family members who were in the Peace Corps in Nepal, and they both have said that it's a great experience. I think I might consider doing it a few years from now (it is a big commitment, so make sure you're ready before you sign up).

I'm hoping to be able to participate in Costa Rica. Right now they have an education outreach program. Since I'll be dual majoring in college in international relations with a focus on Latin America/Latin American studies and something else as well as a minor in Portuguese, I should be good. It would probably be advisable for anyone who plans on doing it that they should become fluent in a foreign language, probably one for where you hope to go.

If that fails I'll just teach history or Spanish or French with Teach for America in inner city schools for 2 years or so after I get my masters and before I go to law or business school.
