To make a long story short I have to write 3-5 page paper and give a 5-7 minute speech persuading people to agree wiht my views on a currently controversial topic. I chose marijuana legalization and was wondering if anybody else had done nething similar and if so could send me a copy of their paper for me to use as a reference.[IMG]

actualy I illegally pirated grass and I've watched it like 1321 times but I dont feel like watchin it and writin down all these stpid facts and stuff, but here is a text of my paper so far, lemme know what you think.

    Legalization of Marijuana
The use of marijuana has been noted and used in thousands of cultures and civilizations throughout the sands of time for its medicinal and mind expanding properties. Some historians believe that the Christian Bible makes references to an herb that can be identified as cannabis-sativa. Tetra-hydro-cannabinol (commonly referred to as THC) is the chemical in marijuana that causes the high effects of the marijuana plant, and to this day there have been no documented deaths from the overdose of this chemical. The evidence is clear to be found throughout the world that the use of marijuana is in most cases safe and not physically addictive.
Anti-marijuana parties argue that the use of marijuana is a very dangerous drug that leads to addiction, and respiratory disease, but the government has yet to repudiate the 1988 finding of the Drug Enforcement Administration's own administrative law judge, Francis Young, who concluded after extensive testimony that "marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man." Serious respiratory illness has been noted only to occur in chronic users, smoking large amounts of cannabis in a short time period over an extended amount of their life. Psychiatric studies show that the mental addiction to marijuana almost only occurs in users who are using marijuana as a social crutch to be accepted by peers and fit in with a specific clique. These users have a mental disorder urging them to smoke marijuana than a normal user might smoke to fulfill their social desires of being accepted.
The gateway theory is another antagonist view of marijuana. Anti marijuana speakers dwell and exaggerate that marijuana is a gateway drug that only leads to serious addiction problems with other hard drugs and by enforcing strict punishments for use and possession of marijuana the use of these drugs can be stopped. Trying to stop heroin use by stopping marijuana use is like trying to stop motorcycle accidents by cracking down on bike riding, is a commonly heard metaphor pertaining to the gateway argument. While it is true that most patients put into rehabilitation hospitals for addiction to hard drugs started out using marijuana, only a very small percent of marijuana users choose to use or experiment with any other forms of drugs. Albert Einstein once said the greatest injustice a country can bring upon itself is to pass a law it cannot enforce and since December of 1937 the United States has been subjecting itself to this injustice. In 2004 the government spent an estimated $10 - $15 billion dollars to make 700,000 arrests for marijuana related crimes, 600,000 of these arrests were only for possessions of small amounts for personal use. Despite the increased penalties and fines for possession and use, marijuana use remains at an all time high.

    Go to www.leap.cc

Watch the short clip here http://leap.cc/audiovideo/LEAPpromo.htm
It will give you a general idea.

Also your argument might sound better if you change it to drugs should be legal. Because actually the war on drugs is not helping the drug problem it is just adding violence in addition to our problems. Also if you talk about just legalizing cannabis people wouldbe more likely to think you are just arguing because you want to use it and not to solve problems. If you want to legalize all drugs then they will start to understand that it is becuae of a bigger more important issue.

Just watch that short quicktime video on the second link and you will understand the war on drugs. Its a holy crusade that makes drugs more dangerous and adds crime. If we want to decrease the %1.3 percent of the population that is addicted to drugs and help them we need to stop the war on drugs first.

But yes, I know cannabis is a much softer drug than alcohol so if alcohol is legal it makes sense for a safer healther drug to be legal too.

Razer, that video clip is really good... especially the point they make when they said back in 1914 ,1.3% of the population was addicted to drugs, and when they decided to start the war on drugs, 1.3% of the population was addicted to drugs then too... now, current day, billions and billions of dollars spent and hundreds of thousands people in jail... still 1.3% of the population is addicted to drugs. Did the war and all the time and money spent change that number? no!

youre in luck buddy. I had essay writing first term and wrote a paper on legalization:

    The Forbidden Herb
Legalizing marijuana is one of the most debated topics in modern America. DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), continuously campaigns to keep marijuana ignorance high in America, and keep the plant illegal. Pro-marijuana groups have been fighting for years to make it legal. Many believe that legalization will bring about positive changes in America, while others would say legalization of marijuana is the harbinger of immorality, and the legalization of other illegal drugs. The legalization of marijuana in the United States would reduce drug related crime and boost the American economy.
When one analyzes the facts about marijuana, one might wonder, “why is this substance illegal, when there are more dangerous substances legal in America?”. One hundred thousand people die resulting from alcohol abuse each year. Zero people have died in history as a direct result of marijuana. Frankly, it’s ridiculous that alcohol, a legal substance, condoned by our society, has caused more fatalities than “the illicit marijuana substance”. Marijuana is a non-toxic substance, unlike many legal drugs on the market today. Between one hundred eighty and one thousand people die each year because of Aspirin, and over one hundred thousand people die resulting from any legal drug. “We’re pro-choice, we think everyone should have the right to smoke pot or not.” said Bud from Sublime, and why not? Almost half a million people die each year as a result of using tobacco products. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man and is found in tobacco. Marijuana, on the other hand, naturally contains no addictive chemicals. It is unjust and unfair to make a substance illegal when it is less dangerous than many legal drugs.
There are a tremendous amount of benefits that could come from legalizing marijuana. The immediate result of legalization would be the release of tens of thousands of non-violent “criminals”, unclogging overcrowded prisons. A reduced amount of crime would follow, because more accessibility to the drug would lead to less desperation in users, and fewer disputes between sellers and buyers. Police officers could also spend more time and effort searching for criminals who are dangerous to society. Many users of marijuana have a terrible attitude towards law enforcement and our government. The legalization would cause users of all ages to appreciate, rather than detest the presence of police in society and further respect the government. Albert Einstein once said, “The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the Prohibition law, for nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this.” Marijuana also has several medical uses, such as reducing nausea in chemotherapy patients, stimulating appetites in AIDS patients, and reducing headaches caused by glaucoma. Legalizing it would increase sufferers’ access to it as a medical treatment. If marijuana were legalized, it could easily become as large and profitable as the tobacco industry. If such an industry were established, hundreds of thousands of job opportunities would open up and unemployment would decrease. The legalization of marijuana would produce many benefits to American economy and to the public.
Research has concluded that while marijuana is not completely harmless, its dangers have been hugely overblown by DARE and other programs. TV commercials by Freevibe would have viewers believe that anyone who smokes pot will blow off obligations with family, forget to baby-sit their younger sibling, or steal money from grandma just to get high again. Then it concludes this message with:
    |R|E|S|P|O|N|S|I|B|I|L|I|T|Y|
    My Anti-Drug.
The use of any substance requires good judgment and responsibly when doing so. People who can’t use drugs without becoming a depraved maniac should not use drugs. As has been stated before, marijuana is not lethal and not addictive. Therefore any conscientious person should be able to use marijuana recreationally without turning into a fiend. All anti-drug programs will state that marijuana is “a gateway drug”, which basically means that people who use marijuana are prone to become users of other drugs over time. The truth is, people who go from smoking weed to smoking crack, do so because of their own choices, not because marijuana made them do it. DARE and other organizations use the
Marijuana has been wrongfully illegalized by the American government. Legalizing marijuana would benefit many more people than it would hurt. It is stupid and senseless to outlaw such a harmless substance. People should have the right to choose whether to smoke marijuana or not. The dangers of marijuana have been overstated to a great extent, and its benefits could significantly better America.
