Has anyone heard this version of "What a Shame Mary Jane" with Syd Barrett on vocals? I just downloaded it and it is fucking nuts. It's more than obvious that Syd Barrett had the most influence on this track. If you haven't heard it, download it right now. I mean it!

theres really no proof out there that syd barrett joined in on that track. and I really doubt he ever did.

    It's a hoax.

All Beatles specialist and sources seem to agree that "What's The New Mary Jane" was recorded for the "White Album" in 1968, but was left out. The consensus is that only John Lennon, George Harrison, Yoko Ono and Mal Evans ever recorded this song, not Syd Barrett.

I guess I'm wrong. All I have to say is that it sounds like Barrett to me, and it gets very crazy at the end. It sure had me convinced.

    Downloading sucks sometimes.
I hate downloading something with a really amazing title that turns out to be garbage or just not what it was supposed to be.
The price we pay for free downloads...

As for studio interaction, as PEPPER was being laid down in Abbey Road 2, the Floyd was working on PIPER at Abbey Road 3 on and off from March to July of 1967. There was noted some visiting back and forth between the two, probably the exhibition of the same interest fellow journeymen have in the project just over the wall.
Note: "What's new(a shame) Mary Jane?" supposed to have been recorded on April 15,1967. There is no way to know for sure unless you ask someone that was there. Even then they might not remember.

So, you're saying that it's possible that Syd could hae done this? If you've heard it then you know that it sounds like Barrett.

its possible that aliens raided the studio and performed an anal probe on syd barretts ass.

seriously, though..... I have strong doubts that ever happened. I have tons of pink floyd books, and none of them point to any existance to where syd recorded a song with john lennon. if this happened, IM sure someone would have mentioned this, especially syd, because he adored john lennon and the beatles.

Beware: there are two versions of this song...One had piano as the main instrument (and if i remember correctly, cause I rarely listen to them, this is the mellow version without a huge freak out) and another had guitar (this is the loud one where lennon screaches really high and there is a big freak out with mal and everyone at the end at the end)

I am also going to have to agree with Madcrappie on this one, if Syd ever was featured on the track, it would have been known by now (i mean look at Eric Clapton on While My Guitar Gentley Weeps)

besides, people are pretty sutipid sometimes... I downloaded a "My goat Just Died" demo by the Troggs, and it was labeled as the Beatles...

Man it's probably the excess of pot who makes you dream of a dreamteam of psychedelic rockers ...but well maybe i can understand you... i never heard this track before...so maybe i can imagine it too...

But there's something essential that you know probably ... This song was recorded while the recording session of the White album !? mmhhh so it's probably by June-October 68 approximatively...

It's much more reallistic for Barrett if it was recorded between June -October 67... 1 or 2 fingers of his feets where still over the ground... but In June-October 68 Barrett was definitly in his own world with nearly no connection with the world... how Barett can record with the beatles in the mid 68!? ...

If you know the date of his history and his decline in the mysterious black hole of human madness...it makes this union even more difficult and nearly impossible...

'Tis a shame though, Hendrix could've done some awesome things I think with that song.

As for the Barrett/Lennon piece, it's almost guarenteed not real.

You guys are probably right. It really sounds like Barrett though. I don't think any of you have heard it except for Burbot. It's the one that starts off with the guitar and gets really fucking crazy at the end. Anyway, it's still awesome.

Does it start out with the verses "She look like an african queen" or does it break right into the insane-ness with a "one two, what a shame maary jane had a pain at the party"?

Interesting not: some beatle song analyzers think this may be another attack of johns towards the maharishi or someone in his camp because of the broken english that sounds like the stereotypical way indians speak english...

It starts with "She looks like an African Queen", and gets completly nuts toward the end. It sounded like Syd to me. I love it anyway.

Ok, yeah. There is another version (a shorter one) that starts with john screaching the "what a shame" line and the guitar strumming.

This song was performed by Pink Floyd,John & Paul in Abbey Road Studios. Pink Floyd was making Piper at the Gates of Dawn and The Beatles was making Sergeant Peppers. There's a video of it on You Tube from April 15, 1967.I had a copy of the song on CD from 20 years ago but I should of kept it.It was on a bootleg compilation. It's not the best song from either group but it is a collaboration that is truly historical.Just trying to set the record straight.------------MAZASH
