I want to start painting with water colors but I have been told it is the hardest medium to paint with. Can anyone give me some advice?

you could just try painting with watercolours to see how you feel about it.

it's better if you don't use flat paper
because when the paint dries up the paper
will get all wavy.rice paper is good

there's special paper for it, just make a small drawing on the paper. Take a big brush, let it suck a lot of water, take a part of the painting you want to do first, and when that part is totally wet take the color you want to use, and bring it to color with the brush. Take a hair-dryer and let it dry fast, take an other part of the drawing and on you go, within an hour you have your fist WaterColor painting!
    Good luck,
    cheers
