this is mainly for water_baby, since this person seems to know what it takes for a band to be considered "progressive". what does the "progressive sound" sound like?? I am intrigued, because you think bands like smashing pumpkins, coldplay and supertramp are progressive rock bands...... oh enlighten me .
Yeah, I'm interested as well. See I always thought prog-rock was sounding like Yes or Genesis, long songs and concept albums and whatnot.. turns out most mainstream 80s or 90s hit singles are ACTUALLY prog-rock! Who knew!
It is safer to consider the real progressive rock music. Progressive rock is a genre from the 70's and before we define it we must consider the music of bands like Yes, ELO, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd. But even Supertramp is progressive rock but more in a pop sort of way, but they have the prog sound. Progressive rock is more clearly seen in it's more specific form of Art Rock, and the greatest art rock band is Yes. It's good we had this discussion, thanks for clearing me about progressive rock. But definately the Smashing Pumpkins have a progressive sound.
By the way Supertramp has a lot of Jazz influence in their music. Any band that uses a saxophone is infleunced by Jazz.
ha, what???????? dave bowie played sax. and I wouldnt necessarily say he was influenced by jazz. I think you are nuts, man.
But I'm taking a course about the history of Rock n Roll and my professor said that any band that has a saxophone is influeiced by jazz because they saxophone is linked to Jazz. First it was the trumpet then the saxophone. There is a lot of jazz influence in rock. Ofcourse, many rock musicians are influenced by jazz. Both blues and jazz are heavily evident, whu am I nuts? I think I am right, Supertramp definately has a jazzy sound, especially when they play the saxophone. Also it's the way they play their music, the style, and some songs are more jazzy than others. It is obvious that Supertramp haz jazz in it's rock. They are progressive rock, they made conceptual albums. The most prog album they made was "Even In The Quietest Moments".
If you read the litterature about Supertramp, it will say that they are progressive rock. I trust my ears and the books.
yes I do know there are alot of jazz influences in rock, thats where you come up with the progressive rock, avante-garde, art rock genres. frank zappa was especially influenced by jazz, and was one of the starters of the whole jazz-rock fusion. there were alot of bands that took the traditional rock elements like the guitar and drums and added them to jazz song structures and elements as well........ bands like mahavishnu orchestra, soft machine, weather report, etc but I would not neccessarily say that every band that uses a sax is directly influenced by jazz. if they were more directly influenced by jazz, they would have odd time signatures and more experimental sound. supertramp is pretty much an offshoot of the moody blues.. and the moody blues were more directly influenced by classical music, not jazz. yes, supertramp is progressive rock, they did have some conceptual albums and were classically trained musicians...... but all these other bands like smashing pumpkins, coldplay and toto is stretching it quite a bit.
Could it be though that the Smashing Pumpkins' album "Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness" be conceptual album? I find it so. But the Smashing Pumpkins are more towards a glam rock type of progressive sound.
marilyn manson had a conceptual album called "antichrist superstar" too, and I wouldnt necessarily call his music "Progressive". there is more than just one thing that automatically labels a group a certain genre. just because smashing pumpkins had one concept album doesnt necessarily make them a progressive band, just as having a saxophone in a band doesnt necessarily make them influenced by jazz and a progressive rock band.
....i would never call bands like coldplay progressive, for me progressive music seems to be more about the music than the lyrics in a sense, coldplay in opionion are to much rock pop
effing read the website i posted on the first page...theres a detailed definition of what progressive rock is or you like arguing for the sake of it?

Progressive Rock, is rock music which has progressed from the normal sounds and escaped into newer version and sounds sometimes taking on other influences (like Jazz or funk), and everynow and then might do a genre hop (like going from metal to pyschedelica or reggae or something) and it also oftern contains strange and ever changing time signitures in songs, and isnt always a concept album. Bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Rush, Tool, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Pain Of Salvation, Queensryche and The Mars Volta are good examples. And bands that can be classified as progressive cause they are like things you dont hear very oftern. Bands like Radiohead, Boredoms, Fantômas, The Devin Townsend Band, Ocean Machine, Mr. Bungle, The Kidney Theives and TransAtlantic. But thats just for basic progressive rock, there are many different forms like madcrappie has stated and listed some. OH and also, I feel that Cold Play are the poor mans Radiohead
