hey again its me, robbi, the troubled bard
has anyone else been in a situation like this?

i have myself a little dilemna. im in a band called axis, playing led zep style hard rock. i been singin in it for 3 years but my music taste has changed a bit and i was considering leaving and hookin up with this cat i known for 5 years. when me n him play together, the cosmos falls off its axis. its that cool.

BUT my band just got an offer to play at the 2nd biggest music venue in Cambridge in front of a max of 1000 ppl with 4 other bands, so it looks like stuff is happenin.

what do i do? ditch my band ive been in for 3 years and miss out on the insanity of hard rock n roll? or do i follow my hippy soul and jam with the other guy?

    thanks you all rock

    That is quite the pickle
It would really depend for me on how much my distates for the old music style has growns, because if you hate playing it it my start to show through in your style and bring the band down slightly
But you could also use the newfound success of the band to maybe help you and the other get gigs

ie: Cool rock band i am in is playing, hey venue man we can open for them

but in the end, i dont think ive awnsered your question

Do the thing with you friend as a side project. You can be in a band and play with other people.

You could leave after the fest, and go over to the jammin' side, of do the project band route. Look at the Dead Kenny Gs and Jacob Fred Jazz Odessey, or even that reid from JFJO is touring with Steve Kimock. Reid is STILL the rhythmic soul of JFJO, but he's getting to play with a master, and one he looks up to, and get some bills paid while Brian Haas from JFJO plays in DKG.
Usually side projects are to keep someone fresh for a main band as well as kicks!

i would do both for a while...keep this band going and play the big gigs but on the side make sure you have a band that is defintely going to work out and is worth dropping your others for...jam with the new band alot and get them sounding good then break it easily to the folks in the old band.tell em what you told us and that you've just found something that would satisfy you more.

I'm in a band right now that sounds like its kind of like your situation. They like almost all good ol' rock and roll and heaver stuff. I'm more into free form, jam based music.

What we do though is we just compromise. I'll get them to base a song around my stuff. And in return I'll do the same for them. Just try to give and take a little bit. And still go jam with this other dude, and if it turns out that your musical need is more filled with this other bro, and you guys are getting somewhere go for it and quit.

    Peace

    thanx for your advice

but yeah this friday/weekend made up my mind. on fridy i hung out with my stoner buddies (the guitarist dude included), toked for a bit and had some awesome jammin. mornin after i head off to band practice and it SUCKED. As in torture. aggrovation, teasing, moodiness, everything. we got jack all music done. musical differences besides, theyre just too fuckin immature.

see in the band i just sing which isnt very challengin in a dirty hard blues based rok band and ive played guitar for 5 years. its time for change. itll also give me an opportunity to explore my own creativity!

so ill do the gig then drop out!
    peace!
