Hurray! I *finally* got to see this movie. It seems clear to me that Jack was gay. Ennis isn't quite so clear cut. I don't want to include any spoilers for those of you who haven't seen the movie yet, but it isn't much of a stretch to figure that Ennis loved Jack very much. He is at least bisexual. This is a powerful movie, one of the best I've seen in years.
I listened to the soundtrack the other day. I really like the instrumental songs. And that song "He was a friend of mine" (by Willie Nelson) gets me all teary eyed and also the song "I don't want to say Goodbye" (the one that plays while Jack and his girlfriend are dancing).
Is he though?? There wasn't any other indication that he was interested in men. The only man he truly loved and felt sexually attracted toward was Jack.
I saw it again today. Still amazing. I almost cried this time. The song playing in Jack's truck one of the times he leaves, "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" by Emmylou Harris is SO good.
I love this movie. I love everything that it has to say about our society and how the characters are portrayed and developed. I suppose that I have to give most of the credit to Annie Proulx because the movie is exactly the way the story is, but Ang Lee did a marvelous job bringing it to the screen. Whether the two main characters are gay or straight or bisexual is irrelevant. This is a story of love, and that is what is so attractive about it. Ennis and Jack found something in one another that they couldn't find anywhere else, a friendship, an intimacy, an understanding. They were soulmates. Ang Lee really showed how thier lives were unsatisfying unless they were together. Because society would not allow them to be together, they were forced to live conventional lives, but they couldn't let each other go, the bond was that strong. Of course this led to unfortunately hurting others, which only goes to show that hate and prejudice is a downward spiral that only gets bigger and bigger and affects more and more innocent people. This movie is about societies tendency to not accept others, to hurt others, to ruin others lives if they are different, and yet it is still about love, a love so strong and elemental that it can survive in any shape or form whether it be man and woman, woman and woman, or man and man. I love this film. Hopefully those that see it will also love it, or at least leave with the basic moral of the story: Live and let Live Love and let Love Peace
It won best picture at the golden globes, among other awards. I was disappointed that Heath Ledger didn't get best actor.. I'm going to go see it again this weekend..can't wait.
Yah it did good at the Golden Globes. Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best original song. Is that all? I really thought Michelle Williams was gonna win best supporting actress. But Phillip Seymour Hoffman totally deserved his award. That man deserved recognition for once. He's such a great actor. But I am still disappointed Jake Gyellenhaal didn't get a nomination for this movie. Oh well, I am happy for what they did get!!
Jack was the love of Ennis's life. He never seemed to have feelings for his wife or anyone else that were as strong as his feelings for Jack. As I see it, that would qualify him as bisexual. Think of all of the people out there who only love and feel sexual attraction for one person.
Why are people still trying to determine if Ennis was gay or bi? We're never gonna know. It's a movie. Yah, I know Heath Ledger did an amazing job in this movie, and Gyllenhaal's character would qualify as supporting, but I'm wondering why he didn't get nominated for that. Either way, the movie did awesome. Yay!
I was a little disappointed at this movie somehow. It was kind of bare. I'm so used to films racing along with so much information that the slow pace of this movie was kind of hard to deal with. And the bare script too. The gay sex was tastefully done, and with a raw edge i think too. mmm although having said that, i think the slow pace of the film was kind of good, mellow and rich praps... at the time i did need the loo so that's probably why i was so impatient at the slow pace. Was very shocked and like "what?!" when thingy died. Just came out of the blue, definitely wasn't expecting that. It was a bit painful and sad watcing that bit . Not once did they say they loved each other. But i guess they didn't have too.
I am so mad becuase our theater won't be playing this movie and the also didnt play memoirs of a Geisha because they said they dont support movies like "that". ugh!
Movies like what? Letters of a Geisha didn't have any edgy plots. Wierd...where the heck do you live? In the bible belt?
FUCK NO!!!! MORE LIKE TOTAL RIP-OFF OF SOUTH PARK!!! Do ya remember, "Independent Films are all about Gay Cowboys eating pudding!"
agreed... I didn't think Memoirs of a Geisha really had anything in it worth "banning" it. p.s. I'm seeing brokeback for the second time tommorow.. can't wait.
You'll love it even more the 2nd time. I know I did. I can't WAIT for it to come out on dvd. Man it's going to be a long wait though...
That's too bad, you would think with all of the awards and nominations more people would want to see it.
