calls Black History Month ‘ridiculous’ What do you think? http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10482634 NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous." "You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history." Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history. Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it." The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism. "I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says. Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."
He has a point about integration, but I don't see anything changing in the near future. By all indications, government schools are doing a worse and worse job teaching history at all. At least having a Black History Month causes just a little more history to be taught.
i don't really ever recall learning anything about black history during february.. it was just like any other month
I do kinda wish that celebrities would stop giving social commentary though. Most of them are such idiots.
I think Black History Month is a reminder and not supposed to be the only time it is discussed. Some 'causes' have seemingly only one day or a week.. Gee a month is like for ever... he should be proud his history gets such a 'big up'.. Infact maybe a month is way too long.. maybe it is overkill.. maybe it should only have one day. I guess he would then say ''black history is so under represented in this country'' friggin jackass oh and he made a few half decent films shawshank not being one of them.. and every one thinks he is Laurence Olivier.. for pitys sake.. Naghh i don't like him that much
You can tell when someone is trying to cause some real progress when a lot of people start criticising them, and the people who things are currently to the advantage of start misquoting them.
