He's writing an essay on the topic of role models, otherwise I'd agree with this. MJP- perhaps you need to examine the criteria you're using to determine what is a role model. Apart from Martin Luther King most of the folks you're listing died from their own excesses- squandering what were admittedly remarkable talents. Not exactly role model material in my book- someone who is going to deprive so many people from enjoying their music- leaving countless musical works unwritten and unperformed because they couldn't control their selfish abuse of drugs. Something to think of and perhaps subject matter for your essay.
Take what your role models give you, and make somthing of that influence. Make music, make art, make poetry, make loud agressive political statements. Find out who your role models, role models were.
That's how I feel about The Doors. Disheartening, isn't it? But . . . yeah. It's a stupid reason to be depressed.
I'm not depressed at all. these people lived their lives, made beautiful music during one of the most exciting times in history, and left us a great legacy. Some of these people are still around. I make music inspired by these people, and I love every minute of it. When standing on the shoulders of giants don't settle for being a munchkin.
Yes, my question was also...why are these people role models to you?? I've known wino's on the street corner who treated others better than some of the most famous jerks in the world. Just because you're a celebrity and can rock out on a geee tar don't mean your worth any one's looking up to you. Do you know anyone in your life who has really overcome adversity?? Or someone in your community who helps others no matter the cost to themselves?? I read about the Owner ofButcher wax company selling his company for 18 million dollars...and he gave everyone who worked for him 1.50 for every hour they ever worked there. So if you had worked there for roughly 10 years...you got an extra check for 31,000 dollars... Now, I do not worship the dollar but this is one example of someone who shared something they did not have to. And they changed alot of lives. So look around...call the newspaper or a local church and find someone around you who does some good...someone worth looking up to.
Oh and certainly alot of the one's mentioned here did create beautiful music..and some of that music may have inspired you or made you think or made you cry or whatever...but please question WHY you pick someone as a role model...
Ok,..Please don't misunderstand me. I have more role models then just musicans. My Father is a role model Great people in history are role models. I'm working to try an be a role model to those who are within my confidence. Gandi Robert Kennedy Buckminster Fuller Lady Theresa Neil Armstrong And my cat Siddhartha They uplift me. They make me think. They give me hope. I was catching a depressed vibe from this thread, so I tried to bring a positive note to it. I'm glad your art is for sale. My music is free. Love digger
As for me? I work a low wage job of my choosing I take care of two ex girlfreinds one with a neurological disorder the other with HIV. I cook for them, I clean & I help pay their bills. I ask for nothing from them but for them to try and find some happyness in a difficult life. They too inspire me. Look before you leap to judgement dear.
WOW Digger, You totally misunderstood. The OP is the one I was replying to. As far as being happy my art is for sale and that your music is free.... My art is my work..its the only income we have, so please look before leaping to judgement dear. Therefore I work a job that is pleasing to me and for myself. I'm sorry the low wage job you have chosen, is so disagreeable to you. I have no issue as to who you choose for role models. Heck, I have no idea who you even are...why in the world would I pass judgement on you or anyone... I find that I can only live my life...can't role my life after anyone else as there may be a similairity here and there,,but thats about where it ends..so many variables. of course there are people who I admire for what they do, or for their way of life...but I have my own path I must follow. I really would not want to be like anyone else anyway. But again..this is my opinion. If you choose to model your life after someone else and have found a way to do that...your beeswax. I do not pass judgement...I question and give opinions...thats all. If I can get a young person to explore a situation all the better. And to question an assignment is fine also... MP asked a question and I gave an OPINION. Got a couple kids myself..29 and 22.. sooooo got a tiny bit of experience with the younger ones....
I apologise, In the effort of needlessly defending myself I become the attacker. You have upon a platter,...my humility and apology digger
cool thing about dead heros is that they wont disappoint you. they wont turn christian on you. then turn back again. they wont turn to islam and hating ppl. and worst of all, they wont start writing derivative crap and try palming if off as so called music. I could name a few, but so can everybody. dead heros are always there for you.
As an aspiring musician, I'm going to look up to other musicians that inspired me. I don't care about their personal character, if they're a bad person, well, that sucks and they should change, but I'm more concerned about the music's quality than the morality of the one who made the music. I'm sure the fair share of my favorite musicians aren't that bad anyways.
